Rob Veteran Posted August 14, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 14, 2005 Wow, what a topic, let's do our best to keep this civil. Here's some options for you. The two major alternatives to Internet Explorer on Windows are: Mozilla Firefox Opera Have a play with them both and choose for yourself, it's reported that unreleased versions of Opera are nearly succeeding 100% in the Acid2 test. Its very much in development. 586384638 Isn't avant just a front end for IE, would that not mean that it would be just as bad as IE in rendering the acid 2 test? I believe as of just now opera is the furthest ahead in the acid 2 test. Well it was last time I heard anything anyway. I would personally recommend opera but this is neowin and it seems to me like 90% of all the users here use firefox so I would think you would get more recommendations for it than for opera. But why don't you just download and try both of them and see what floats your boat.

Lovell
Firefox if you don't mind having to download all the features, or Opera if you want a browser which comes with features.

jp10558
Yeah, both have free versions, so give each a try. I'm partial to Opera, but it did cost me $20. If cost is the most important thing, then of course don't use Opera.

But those are as a result of some major engine rewrites that won't be seen by the public for a while (Opera's own words).

Well it was last time I heard anything anyway. 586384950 Actually, WebKit had it perfect first. That version is still in testing and hasn't been released as a final, but you can download the WebKit nightly and see for yourself. But yes, of Windows browsers, Opera nearly has it in internal builds (but why they needed a nearly complete rewrite for it [again] is beyond me). ThePast
A picture say more than a thousand words. I did not bother with IE since it is lightyears behind Opera and Firefox in passing the acid2 test.
turkishdelight
I would personally recommend Firefox, but if you're looking for a browser whose creators are specifically trying to improve Acid2 test performance, go with Opera :)
Ambience
What does passing the Acid 2 test mean? Is it just for bragging rights or...?
ThePast
What does passing the Acid 2 test mean? Is it just for bragging rights or...? 586409490 No, it is not just for bragging rights it is there for browser vendors to test standards compliance. However, passing the test does not necessarily mean that a browser is fully standard compliant, but a browsers performance on the test is a good indication on how much the vendor care about standards and on how hard they are working towards that goal. abc@home
What does passing the Acid 2 test mean? Is it just for bragging rights or...? 586409490 It means that the browser supports all the css rules used in the test. But you know if browsers do not support a css rule, web developers probably won't use that rule in the first place.
