turn the computer off, go to the store, get a new HD, and backup ASAP

whenever a harddrive makes that are not normal, its never good.

Yeah its a better idea to turn it off and leave it off. As soon as you do that, determine what needs to be back up from the drive, get a tape backup or some blank CD's and start copying away. Better yet, if you have a spare HD with lots of space, consider transferring the files over to that drive. And replace the one making funny noises. Perhaps you need more fans for cooling in the case too. Heat is not good for Hard drives.

Are you sure your computer isn't also celebrating the 4th of July? Afterall, my computer was making loud noises 2 days ago on the Canada Day, New Years and all the other big holidays..........hmmmm. Maybe Western Digital is being a bit too patriotic.

Is your disk heavily fragmented? Perhaps when doing heavy work, it is running wild moving the head all over the place.. Also - check to make sure it isn't the vibration of the disk causing your case to rattle, or also make sure there isn't a wire touching the hard drive rattling..

Other then that, I'd back up and get an IBM hard drive.. BAHAHA just kidding.... :p :p

Actually, I've had my 40 GIG IBM drive for just about 2 years now and it still works perfectly. I was lucky enough not to have one of the defective batches. Its my primary HD on my system and its really fast.
