Cannibal Corpse
Hi All, I have just got a Visiontek Xtasy GeForce4 Ti4600, and I am playing WARCRAFT III, and for no reason after a couple of minutes the game (and the system) freezes, so I have to reboot. My system specs: Intel PIII-850MHz 1GB PC-133 SDRAM RAM Abit BX6-Rev 2.01 MoBo Visiontek Xtasy GeForce4 Ti4600 40GB HDD (Maxtor) I just replaced Visiontek Xtasy GeForce4 Ti4600, with my good old Prophet 3D Ultra (GeForce 2 Ultra, 64MB) I have NOT overclocked my system, nor this new video card and my PC Case is open, so the OVERHEATING is NOT an issue. I am using the latest official nVIDIA drivers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
KarlSATX
How big is your power supply? I had been running an HP Pavilion 5545 with a 300 watt Power Supply, with DVD, CD-RW, Two 40GB Hard Drives, SB Audigy MP3+ and GeForce-2 Ti. After a few minutes of music my computer would freeze. I replaced the power supply with a 450 watt and that ended my problem. Check to ensure you don't have too many devices and cards pulling too much power for the power supply to handle. If you do, that's your problem right there. According to the info on your spec's you do have some devices that will pull quite a bit of power. Something to check
Cannibal Corpse
Good Call! I never thought of that. My PS is only a 250W. I think I should upgrade to my PS to a more powerfull one. Which one do you recommend? 300W or 350W?
Fedr0
Me! Me! Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! Send that card over here and I'll send you a better card that will solve all your problems! A mighty GeForce 2 MX (taken from my wife's computer)!!! :p

Cannibal Corpse
The strange thing is that my system does NOT Freeze in normal Windows operations (reading e-mails, browsing the Internet, etc.)

chavo
An open case is not always the most efficient way to cool it. Case fans are designed to move the air over the components, with the cover on. I'd definetly get a bigger power supply as well. 300 to 350W will be fine but they are really cheap anyway, get a good one.
Cannibal Corpse
OK, I just went out and bought an ANTEC "SmartPower" 350W Power Supply. Installed it, and started playing the game: The game runs fine for 5 minutes, but the game still freezes... I am beginning to think that maybe the Visiontek Xtasy GeForce4 Ti4600 card is bad since it does NOT have the traditional nVIDIA PATENTED heatsink/fan combo: Instead it has a measley blue "orb" shaped fan. The Card itself is REALLY hot also... Shouldn't I tweak anything in my MoBo's BIOS? What about the size of APARTURE GRILL? (It is set to 64MB) Any clues? Thanks again. Cannibal Corpse
I got it at a local BEST BUY. I know that it is NOT supposed to come with the "ORB". I will call VisionTek's TECH SUPPORT and if it is not the case I get my money back.
DrunkenMaster
Cannibal, when you do get the card running, can you let me know how well it runs on your computer. I have a TNT2 cards right now on a similar system (PIII 800 w/ 640 MB Ram). Natrually, I've only seen benchmarks on P4 2.x+ systems. I know the 4600 won't be able to do as much on a PIII than a P4. It be nice to see benchmarks. Anyone know of any for "slower" (PIII) system benchmarks on the GF4 cards on the net????

dilmonen
Yeah, no kidding. Beast Buy / Worst Buy / Steaming Pile of Dung = all the same thing. The VT Ti4600 should have had that nVidia style cooler on it. I know because I sell them and almost kept one for myself. Wound up with an ABIT Ti4400 that I overclocked to Ti4600 speeds with a BIOS hack. Works great, gets warm, but not hot.

Cannibal Corpse
I called VisionTek's Support, and the rep told me that the newer revisions all come with this ORB heatsink/fan. (which is weird) Also he told me since my MoBo has an Intel 440BX chipset, it not fully complient with AGP 2.0X specifications, so the freezing might be attributed to that. Funny thing is the card was working fine with MEDAL of HONOR, MAX PAYNE and other games. I said WAS becuase I retured the piece of sh*t back. (along with Antec 350W PS). My beloved Hercules 3D II Ultra is just doing fine at 1024x768. I am NOT ready for P4, nor GayForce 4.
Afroman
are you sure thats a 4600? because i know the xtesy 4200 128 mb comes with a blue orb looking thing it's just chopped in half.. check the drivers under properties is it really a 4600?
