Opening pages/URLs in Opera

Recommended Posts

Associating Opera to open HTML files and URLs is a bit painful for this reason: when I launch a HTML file or a URL file, not only does the page load in a new tab but the homepage loads as well. This is quite annoying. (Note: this is only when Opera is not running.)

What setting did I mess up, or is there a workaround by editing the opera6.ini file?

Do you have opera set to load your home page everytime it starts? If so then opera is only doing what you told it to do.

I never have this problem though because I have my opera set to continue from last time. Therefore it opens all the pages which were already open plus the new url I asked it to open.

I don't believe there is any way to keep your current settings and solve this problem.

Yes, I set Opera to open the homepage on startup.

I remember the behaviour was correct in version 7.x - the page would open in one tab and the homepage will not if a HTML/URL was loaded.

Im guessing that you need to have Opera start with no pages. You still have you home page, but you have to click the "Home" button for it to load so you dont have to worry about typing it in everytime.

I'm not sure I would call the "new" behavior incorrect - just not what you want. It's perfectly legitimate for your homepage to open every time you open the browser if you tell it in settings to open to home page.

And I certainly prefer links I click to open in a new tab vs overwriting some already open tab.

That said, I think there needs to be an option to work both ways - but I don't think one currently exists. I would suggest going to the Opera forums and posting in the wishlist forum.

NetCaptor has had the option of "bypassing the home page when starting from external links" for years. This is very near the top of my Opera wishlist.

OK now I have a slightly more severe problem with Opera. Now it refuses to load a HTML page or a URL link I launch in Windows if the browser is not already running.

For instance, I click on a link in a RSS reader widget (in Konfabulator). Opera boots up but doesn't load the page.

If I type in a URL in Start Menu > Run, I get an error:

"Windows cannot find http://www.website.com..."

For now I'm forced to fall back to Firefox until I can find a fix for this.

That is incredibly strange. All the problems which you describe, I have been doing for a while. I think it might be the way you set it up.

1) Clicking on links in a MSN Messenger conversation open a new tab and loads the page

2) Clicking on the "digg RSS Newsfeed" link opens a new tab and loads the page

This behaviour happens regardless of whether the browser is open or not.

The one option I use all the time without change is the "Continue from last time" for startup options. Though I do use "about:blank" for my homepage.

How do you have opera set up to open? I have mine set to continue from last time and I don't have any problems? Also is opera set as the default browser? One more thing what version of opera are you using?

Yeah, it was working just like that until today.

Yes, Opera is set as the default browser. (Well, now it isn't... for now.) I am also using the latest version of Opera (version 8.02 build 7680).

How can I do to make the links in the tabs of MSN Messenger work with opera???

586428249[/snapback]

Unfortunately, it won't work. The reason? You're clicking on links in an embedded IE ActiveX control. (For instance, if you subscribed to Neowin's Alerts service, and access your Alerts in MSN Messenger, they load in a web page powered by the IE ActiveX.)

On the other hand, clicking on other links, such as those in conversation windows, opens up your default browser (with the exception of checking your Hotmail).

So to sum it all up, no the behaviour can't be changed. Unless there's a third party tool that can correct this behaviour - which I am not aware of.

By itself, no Messenger Plus! cannot do that. But install the StuffPlug-NG plugin and it's possible. (Now I realized this after looking at its features list.)
