Weird Audio Bug with Beta 1 - Screenshot included

Recommended Posts

Hi I have sorted all the problems with my Vista install except for 1.

newaudioproblem.jpg

The Audio Drivers are installed, I keep getting a stupid New device being found at startup, "Unknown Device" then it tries to install Microsoft Kernal DMR something or other but fails to install it.

I have an AUDIGY LS (Live! 24 Bit) Soundblaster and I have tried alot of drivers from old drivers from the CD to new official, the KXProject Drivers, Windows XP drivers. But now I keep getting this Windows Audio is disabled, when I do click to enable it, it asks to restart so I do, then when I reload, nothing has changed! Its still disabled.

I have heard this problem being mentioned before, its my last great thing to fix in Vista so I can get on with beta testing it.

Someone Please help, thanks.

This is not the place for this. You are either breaking your NDA assuming you are a real tester, or asking people to help you with bugs in something you shouldn't have as it is.

If you are an actual tester, bring these issues to the news groups, not here.

If you aren't a tester, well then you just yelled to everyone here that you are illegally using this software :)

Edit: That and that picture is HUGE. Thumbnails, please.

I have asked on the connect, the newsgroups, irc and here. The NDA does not state anything about this, I havent released any actual data other than a screenshot of the problem.

I suggest you re-read your NDA then. Talking about the beta breaks it, and posting a picture DEFINITELY breaks it. NDA means Non Disclosure Agreement, meaning you wont tell anyone who is not in the beta ANYTHING that has to do with the beta. Your post here is very definitely against the rules of your NDA.

I don't "give it a break". Why the hell would I do that? You make it sound like it's as simple as something like a typo. Breaking an NDA is illegal, and hurts us all. Just like when Thurrott ran his mouth about sidebar being in current builds. All he has done is made sure that we will never again get this kind of information ahead of time, because they can't trust those who read the news groups to keep quiet. I do take pride in my beta testing, and get annoyed with people who can't follow their NDA. I'm sorry, I just do. Especially when we are in a Tech Beta. Tech Beta is not supposed to be for the general little kiddies (that's not aimed at you Blackbolt, just in general), it's supposed to be for developers, be it software or hardware, or proven testers. I'd hope that the Tech Beta, of any, would be the one that people would respect the most.

Yes, it is something that is something that I am more vocal about. Why? I dunno. Probably a bit of pride, but largely because most of this stuff doesn't need to be out there. As of right now, the ONLY thing MS has done widely publically with Vista, is announce the name, and start up the website. Other than that, the general public shouldn't know about it any more. Leaked builds, chatter from conferences for specific user groups etc. It causes the unnecessary hype which we are now seeing. You never see that with Apple. OS X isn't widely publicized and leaked by it's testers when it's in beta.

Anyway, I dunno, I'm sorry, it's just something that gets me. And had a screenshot not been posted, I might have ignored it. A screenshot just pushes the limit.

And that people, is what grinds my gears, Tom.

Funny.

When Paul Thurrott releases about 3 pages filled with screenshots, details and features about Vista, people adore him.

But when one tester comes out on a forum for help, people like Betaz start bitching at them. Why not just close the forum then, if it's THAT risky to let the rest of the world see some screenshots! Why should we have to hide it so much from them ? We're not talking about nuclear launch codes, we're talking about screenshots of little beta desktop OS.

It's only a beta, and I really don't think it hurts the entire beta testing team to see a little screenshot with a "Control Panel" window on it.

Big deal.

I have a life, thanks, more so than a majority of the people on this board probably do. And I'm sure every one of you has something that annoys you. This is just one of those things for me. And yes, unfortunately people do adore Paul for his tons of leaked information. Those of us who actually deal with this stuff hate him for that. Plenty of us know the things he leaks long before he leaks it, but know how to keep our mouths shut. I will say not to mistake some of the Beta 1 stuff for hte press kits. Press was given certain pictures and information for release. I'm talking about things he leaks like the sidebar being the latest example.

Like I said, if this stuff started leaking after the regular beta was going, that would be one thing, but the tech beta is supposed to be people who are more reliable testers. I dunno, it just annoys me that I know a lot of people who got in and are going to leak everything they see and hear. And by the way, I mean none of that to Blackbolt, that's just my general rant of the situation.

Don't attack me when I'm on the legal side of things. Sounds like it's the warez kiddies who need to get a life. If you want to argue or throw comments like that out, at least have the intelligence to keep it to people who are in the wrong, and not people who are following the rules.

Beta 1 is not under NDA. Screenshots and discussion of the build is allowed.

Source: announcements newsgroup.

This only applies to Beta 1 (5112).

Now, can we get back to helping Blackbolt with his problem?

Relax...jesus. Its just a picture, its not the end of the world. Youre making it sound as if it is.

And this IS the beta discussion forum, is it not? Lmao...what has this place come to.

NDA or not, this is a known issue with audigy based cards and should be fixed in beta 2 according to the newsgroups/connect.

sorry I can't help you out any better than that

There have been a number of questions around this so I would like to clarify this.  If you check the EULA for Beta 1 you will see there is no requirement of confidentiality.  This means you are absolutely allowed to discuss Beta 1 with 3rd parties, your blogs etc.  Properly credited screenshots etc are of course, allowed.

This statement applies to the Beta 1 build and I can make no guarantees currently about future builds.  The EULA could in fact contain different terms.  We can address that should the situation change in the future.

I hope this answers some of the questions I've been getting lately.

Thanks.

Paul

See Betaz ? There's nothing to worry about !

Now, for the audio problem. Try installing manually some drivers, in the Device Manager, that's how I got my video card to work !

Well then, I stand corrected, and thank you for doing so. I'm sorry to Blackbolt then. I haven't been around the newsgroups or testing for the last two weeks due to going out of town to visit my parents.

If it's not under NDA, then that's fine, however I do find it rediculous how lightly most people take NDAs. Only seems to happen with the kiddies that get on Microsoft tests. I am testing a few other big things, 2 things that are almost as big as Vista itself, bigger than any other current MSN test, and nothing gets leaked there. People are given an NDA and they respect it. You just make yourself look like a moron by telling ME to calm down (which by the way, I'm in no way not calm while typing any of this) when I'm the one arguing for the side of doing what's right and legal.

Anyway, like I said, I've been corrected of this case, so I'm sorry for telling Blackbolt he was breaking NDA, however what I said still applies for anything else that IS under NDA.

I fully understand you, and there had been alot of discussion lately around the newsgroups reagarding if we could or could not discuss/post screenshots of Beta 1 - and this post was made by Paul just yersterday. I'm sure we all fully understand your concern - was just a misunderstanding in this case since the Beta 1 EULA actually does not include anything pertaining to confidentiality.

Betaz explained himself, I think we should consider this closed.

@Blackbolt :

Vista is in Beta right now, this will probably be corrected in future betas and RC's.

Shut up mate, he admitted he was wrong and apologised, let it go, just because you are jealous about not getting Vista. (by the way, if you did get Vista, legally or illegaly, you didn't deserve to)

Dude..what the hell is wrong with you? Your nothing but an elitest troll going about attacking other people because you think your gods gift to the world.. Well **** you.. All he asked for was help and you go balistic on him, 50+ statements on how the "kiddies" post screenshots and break the NDA just to validate your phsychotic rampage at Blackbolt for asking for help with a screenshot, do your self a favor, visit your docter.. get some prozac..maybe an anti-psychotic...

Anyways, I had the same problem as you when I tried 5048 -middle finger to Betaz-, Your sound card is currently unsupported and will most likely be fully supported in a later build of Vista, Since mine was the same as yours -RealTek AC'97-, it'll improve in time, dont worry about it too much.

--Sorry about the double post, betaz ****ed me off too much and I didnt think abuot it at the time--
