Erftek
Why do you use Opera rather than other browsers? Edited August 23, 2005 by Erftek
trigger_my_passion
1. Speed. Opera is just so smooth and fast it's like a browser on steroids 2. Instant back and instant forward 3. Availability of these by default: a) Mouse gestures b) ability to specify where new tabs are to be opened c) customizable shortcuts ('z' takes back, 'x' goes fwd) d) ability to drag the tabs around e) auto refreshing f) Session saver g) Auto completion of forms (just have to enter the info once in the prefs) h) Boss key (ctrl+H minimizes to sys tray) i) an icon to open the recently closed webpages 4. Magic wand <--- awesome! (The only thing that doesn't yet exist in FF even w/ extensions) 5. Small but thoughtful features: a) Dbl clking a word brings up a context menu, just a clk away from google/dictionary/encyclopedia searches, translation. Shift clking opens in new tab b) Clk in the address bar brings up the foll:
+virtorio MVC Posted August 23, 2005 MVC Share Posted August 23, 2005 a) Very fast at viewing pages, plus a much better back-forward system than others (it actually restores what's in your cache, not just tries to reload the page) b) Doesn't effect system performance at all (and when you use the type of software I do, this is important) c) An easy to use and attractive UI. It seems (for me anyway) to work a lot better than other browsers, with things like dragging pages from the address bar onto my personal toolbar folder and so on. There are lots of other things as well. d) Better tab management than I've seen from Mozilla.org's alternatives. IE7’s tab system seems very simple at this point. e) Superior Zoom functionality to other browsers and considering my eye sight is terrible this is very important. f) Better download manager built in than other browsers. g) Scrolling seems a lot smoother in Opera than other browsers. h) Has plenty of functionality right after install without me having to download two dozen extensions. The only browser I like as much is Safari, and considering I use Windows at work, Opera is the best choice for me.
Zxian
All the reasons said... :D It's just got the right "feel" compared to other browsers.

phend-one
Been using Opera for a while after my friend showed me it. I even tried to get Firefox to have the same functionality, which it achieved but DOGASS SLOW. I don't have a blazing fast computer, there's no point when all I do is look at webpages. Opera has the speed I can tolerate and feature set to make browsing efficient. For those who b!tch, moan and whine about pages not displaying properly, have too much time to sit around and figure out pages "correct" looks. Who the hell cares, that should be the site designers problem. Don't get me wrong, I use Firefox for secure pages like eBay/Paypal/Bank because I feel having a browser for specific purposes is more secure. It's for daily browsing and stuff that I use the fastest browser possible. Thanks for the tip about Ctrl + H. I am finding that increasingly useful ;)
d3bruts1d
1- Speed, I think everyone else has said this. :p 2- The ability to customize the UI more than any other browser. This includes the look (more than just "skins") and the mouse and keyboard settings. 3- Built in features that "work". -- Mouse Gestures -- Notes -- Tabs -- EMail. If you like GMail, you'll like Opera's email client. -- Wand -- Paste and go 4- UserJS is also pretty nice. 5- Availability. It's there on just about every platform. 6- Voice navigation. Screw surfing with keyboard and mouse. Tell your browser where to go. :p I love Opera, but I wish they'd do more work to improve M2 as far as the IRC and Feeds part of the program go. Pink Floyd Veteran Posted August 26, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 26, 2005 the only thing that bugs me with opera is that I've never been able to collapse white space taken by ads blocked by filter.ini and css style sheet :(

jp10558
Well, why I use Opera over alternatives: 1) Speed. IDK why, but for me, IE and FF are both noticablly slower for the way I work. 2) Out of the box ready to go. For IE or FF I'd need to download more programs or extensions to get things to work right (Tabs, Mouse Guestures etc). 3) Secure. Just about impossible to exploit, very few known exploits over the history, all are patched quickly. Also, (to some this is a con) I know I'm never going to get some strange toolbar in Opera, as there is no way for outside programs to hook into it. This is the biggest vexation I have with IE, I'll install legitimate programs like Acrobat Reader, and they'll add ****** to IE! 4) Great community at my.opera.com/forums. Just ready to help out. 5) Inertia - been using it now since v5.12 or 2001 - any other browser needs to do what Opera does and work like it out of the box, plus have other super features to get me to switch. Or, it needs to have some feature that *I MUST HAVE* right now that is more valuable to me than the time spent transitioning to that browser. IE likely won't ever, FF doesn't now, the rest haven't hit my radar screen yet. This is the biggest one, for many of the same reasions people are loath to switch to Opera from IE or FF, I am loath to switch to either of those. For me it's - Speed (I'm on dialup, so I can tell difference between FF, IE and Opera :p) - Flexibilty, even if it doesn't have plug-in support, you can still change almost anything in it, from context menus to UI - Good standards support - Author/User Modes. Now you can read those ugly contrast pages with a click of button :p

Forum sigs are to be used respectfully, Neowin already has to display ads to cover the running costs, so don't annoy our members by making your sig into some sort of web ad. (ie: Advertising in your sig is not allowed). Neowin is not a place to do this. It's OK to place a simple image linking to, for instance, getfirefox.com (although I would just gawk at it  )but not to affiliate related programs. Likewise, Opera has a program where 250 referrals = a license for you. Those aren't allowed here either.

H3lix
Opera is a great brower, but there are somethings about it that will keep me on FF. Until I figure out go to put the personal bar UNDER the address bar and I figure out why some web pages dont display properly I'm keeping FF. Everything else in Opera is simply amazing. :D

skase
All said above, + millions of little things. for instance, in the address bar type "g blah" and it'll do a google search. g=google middle click opens in background. read while it loads.
