I use it over firefox because I feel it gets my browsing and email work done more efficiently than any other browser. I think it is mainly the perfect integration and speed of features that cannot be imitated by extensions.

there is one major reason that i use opera....it is a smaller filesize than firefox and firefox (without those damn extensions) cant even do 1/4 of the stuff opera can do at default. how opera can have a web browser, irc client, and mail client in one program and still be a smaller download than bare bones firefox amazes me.

opera all the way :D

They take the time tooptimize> code. Quote from the chat held earlier today:

TheMajor:[/b]> How important is the Opera-setup file-size to Opera Software when adding new features? Do you sometimes decide to not include a feature cause it could increase the file-size?

Jon:> File size is important. We aim to provide a small and fast solution. We will do what is necessary to achive that goal. Adding features that add to the size is not done lightly.

Seems like they actually recognize that 56 kbps connections are still around.

I'll do a quick analysis here from leftover installers on my HD:

Opera installer sizes:

7.2: 3.24 MB

7.5: 3.49 MB

8.0: 3.59 MB (engine rewritten)

8.2: 3.66 MB

Firefox installer sizes:

0.9.2: 4.84 MB (yipe!)

1.0: 4.68 MB

1.01: 4.59 MB (hmm, not bad)

1.02: 4.60 MB

1.05: 4.66 MB

Deer Park Alpha 1: 4.70 MB

While I'd admit Firefox deserves credit for at least having a smaller package than IE (ahh, I remember the days of IE5 where I'd download 29+ MBs to upgrade my Windows 95/98 system), they can still do better, considering that the browser is simplistic, and yet an all-in-one suite still manages to be smaller and faster (in terms of UI reponsiveness).

Top reasons would be:

1. Speed - Web and application wise

2. Extreme customizable - Saving me valuble screen space.

3. Adding any search engine within search bar for direct query submission.

4. Option to avoid stealing focus from webpages.

5. Mouse gestures.

6. Option to always show address bar for popups - You know the exact URL of that popup, even for secure sites.

7. Sessions.

Doesn't slow everything down on older computers.

Enters username/password by push ctrl+enter or a button u can put anywhere. Can store that username/password for the whole server or that page only. For eg. At hotmail login I push CTRL + ENTER and it gives me a list of my hotmail addresses I've typed in once prior. I select and wala!

how about

integrated IRC Chat

Integrated Mail

Integrated Note taking (great when researching)

586457393[/snapback]

Yea. Notes is a great feature.

I prefer Opera because of:

1. Speed (not only webpages, also interface.)

2. Sessions

3. Remembers last opended sites if crashing.

4. mousegestures

5. M2 client

6. Notes

7. IRC

8. Feeds

9. Magic Wand! <-- almost forgot that one

I guess people have covered all of those :) And whats even greater, its built in!

edit: opsie.. forgot magic wand

  • 2 weeks later...

Since this thread is about reasons people use Opera, here's what I think:

1) For the moment, Opera is very fast for browsing.

2) If you really like to have all the features you'll ever use and many you'll likely not, Opera is the browser for you.

3) The page zoom feature is pretty killer, imho.

Firefox mention: The soon to be released Firefox 1.5 addresses the browsing speed (fast back/forward, plus rendering improvements make Firefox faster to me than Opera), will make extension/update installing far better than it currently is, and should allow for features like page zoom, and more (canvas element?).

Really it comes down to what suits you: Firefox = simplicity/extensibility, Opera = lots o' features, IE = it (barely) does the job for you. There's nothing wrong w/ any of these philosophies... except the IE one ;). Opera is a great browser that suits the needs of a lot of people.

True, Since I'm a more advanced computer user. I recommend Opera to others like me. But with some friends and family that use IE and dont know any better. I give them Firefox.

Opera (as a browser) also works very well for me.

I played around with the integrated mail client for the last few weeks, but switched back to thunderbird, because i miss smime and pgp/gpg feature a lot. I think the mail client has potential, but needs some additional features for the advanced user.

One large section of internet users that regularly get overlooked are vision-impaired users (No pun intended ). Technology, computers and the internet add a lot to their quality of life. I have a friend who is "legally blind" - i.e. his vision is pretty shocking.

Being able to use his computer and surf the internet means a great deal to him... it's unfortunate that most software and web developers don't feel the same way. Not many applications or web sites make provisions for people in his position, which just makes life more difficult than it needs to be.

A browser like Opera is a breath of fresh air. Out-of-the-box it provides excellent page zooming, and other features such as styling (including accessibility mode).

The thought that the creators of Opera have put into their product is refreshing. Not to mention they gave it away for free!

He could also use the voice feature to have opera read the pages out to him and also to control opera.

Your post reminded me of this extract from here:

This section is basically a response to a /. post by a Firefox fanboy, on the topic of the new Opera 8 beta release also supporting voice. Sadly, this sort of post turns up far too often;

"I think that Opera people should care most about fixing things in it's browser instead of adding features that nobody (95%) will use." http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=133850&cid=11175439

- This attitude is incredibly selfish. So just because there are fewer people with visual disabilities than people without them, the people with them should not be catered for? At all? And they don't deserve to have anything done to help them until this one person has had all their pet bugs fixed? Selfish people like this do nothing but harm to the name of browsers. They defy the spirit in which the Web was created, and they don't deserve to use the Web at all.

Nice to hear that the minority is being catered to.
