Google's Jabber Server Works

Recommended Posts

What's so exciting about all this? Oh boy, another IM server is up; at least maybe wait for the Google IM Client, maybe it'll be something special (although I highly doubt it'll feature anything that will make me switch to it). Some people are making too much of this for no reason.

Jabber supports multiple protocols (MSN, AIM, IRC, YAHOO) all at the server level, so users could just switch.

And the respective companies could very easily block Google's servers from communicating with their network. Way back in the beginning of MSN Messenger, it interoperated with AIM. Microsoft played a cat and mouse game with AOL for a while, and then just gave up. If Google tries for interoperability, I can see the exact same thing happening. Which is exactly why I don't think they'll support it.

Making it work in Miranda:

First, get the OpenSSL dll files from here:

http://jabber.au.edu/miranda/

Extract them to your Miranda folder

NOT YOUR PLUGINS FOLDER.

Then start Miranda.

Some of these settings may not be required to connect, but they worked for me.

You can probably uncheck the box for "Manually specify" whatever.

What exactly is the purpose of Jabber anyways? It supports AIM, MSN, etc.? If so, how do we message people on other protocols using Jabber?
