rmorris003
From durhamregion.com http://www.durhamregion.com/dr/regions/dur...p-3469747c.html "OSHAWA -- A tense five hour standoff between police and an armed Oshawa resident ended in tragedy Wednesday afternoon, after the man took his own life. Police were called to a residence on Crerar Avenue around 10 a.m., after a neighbour reported hearing several shots fired inside the home. Brian McCabe was walking his dog on a nearby street and said he heard three loud bangs several minutes before a swarm of police cars arrived on scene, closing Wilson Road between Olive and Dean streets, and several side roads. After confirming that the man was armed and not cooperating with orders to leave the residence, the tactical support unit arrived with a police negotiator and forensic psychologist. Durham Regional Police spokesman Dave Selby said the 45-year-old man in the home was upset about a relationship that had recently ended. ?He was very distraught about this personal relationship, and we did everything we could to solve the situation? he said, noting that the man was communicating with police and negotiators on and off for almost five hours. ?It?s a tragedy for the family and very difficult for the police that it ended this way.? According to DRPS Sergeant Paul McCurbin, the man indicated just after 3 p.m. that he was preparing to come out of the residence, however minutes later a single gunshot was fired inside the house. The tactical unit responded by firing several tear gas canisters into the home, from an armored vehicle. ?After introducing tear gas, members of the tactical support unit entered the home and located the body of a male in the basement,? he said. ?It appears that he died from a self inflicted gunshot wound.? Police are not releasing the name of the man, as is standard practice in the event of a suicide. Many neighbours and local business owners were shaken by the incident. Police closed businesses in the two plazas located at the corner of Wilson and Olive streets, and instructed neighbours to stay in their homes with the doors locked. ?The police just told us to get inside and stay inside,? said Mark Rooney, owner of Cor-Mar Auto Service. ?We heard shots and sirens, but no one told us what?s going on.? Despite orders from police, many neighbours ventured onto porches and front lawns to watch the unfolding drama, ducking in terror when the loud pop of tear gas canisters was mistaken for gunfire. ?It?s scary for my kids to see all the police everywhere and not be able to go outside,? said Lisa Corbett, who was visiting a friend nearby with her two young children. ?I don?t want to have to tell them there?s a guy with a gun.? Mr. Selby said the Special Investigation Unit has been called, which is standard procedure when a civilian is injured or killed during an incident involving police." I say what a loser but its said he killed himself over a relationship, this was the next block over from me and I had a fun time going around it when coming home from work as I drive right through that plaza every time I goto and come from work. strekship
I wouldn't call some guy killing himself as tragic. If he wants to go, thats his own buissness. It would have been tragic if he had killed someone else in the process though.
Commodore Max
That was senseless. People kill themselves for a reason, by the way ... But yeah, next time someone's about to kill himself, make sure you tell him to kill someone else too, so it can be tragic ... Right ...
