curme
China blocks online gamers from playing for more than 3 consecutive hoursBy Faye Wang Shanghai. August 23. INTERFAX-CHINA - The Chinese Government unveiled a new system Tuesday to prevent individuals from playing online games for more than three consecutive hours, which must be installed for every online game in the country. "This timing mechanism can prevent young people from becoming addicted to online games," Kou Xiaowei, Deputy Director of the Audiovisual and Internet Publication Department of the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP), said during a press conference. The new system, developed under the guidance of the GAPP, stops individuals from playing online games for more than three hours by cutting the abilities of game characters. The new system cuts the ability level of a player's online game character by half after he or she has played for more than three consecutive hours. Once a player has played for more than five consecutive hours, the system cuts the ability level of that player's character to the lowest level allowed by the game. The system also lowers the ability of players to find treasures or prizes available in an online game after they have played for more than three consecutive hours. Furthermore, the system keeps track of hours of play. Individuals who immediately log back onto a game after three hours of consecutive play will continue to have the ability of their game character lowered by the system. Players must be logged off for a minimum of five hours before the system resets. The GAPP has defined the playing of online games for less than three consecutive hours as "healthy," playing three to five consecutive hours as "tiring," and playing for more than five consecutive hours as "unhealthy." Interfax All I can say is: "WOW!"

+Dick Montage Subscriber² Posted August 25, 2005 Subscriber² Share Posted August 25, 2005 In fairness, if you play for more than 3 hours straight, it seems you may need a little external control in your life.

vferreira
lol that cant be true lol That's ridiculous, i think that everyone should be responsible enought to take care of his own life. We don't see any rules for smoking in our own houses dont we. There are so many thing's that can prejudicate the kids, that the computer games are at the bottom of the list. And more, that should be the parent's job, to don't let their son's to play more a certain time straight. And ye, that title gives some respect lol DDAIPDGAPP - Deputy Director of the Audiovisual and Internet Publication Department of the General Administration of Press and Publication lol Asta

madnuke
This is what worrys me about China, it a democratic country the government does not control what people do, China is now a semi-communist dictatorship. I think more should be done to blockade China so we dont become dependant on them for things, its like why are they building up their military still? If someone is thtat sad they deserve to die from gameing.

devyant
Still that's easily a personal problem. I can easily see petitions and etc coming up real soon, its like making smokers have only 3 cigarettes per day "so as to prevent health problems." I mean, its all obvious, whether the players choose to just addict themselves or play it for leisure is their own problem and choice.

esaleris
I know some college students who have come from China as a foreign student. They far and beyond kick everybody's asses in any course, whether it be language, sciences, or even business. Some have expressed that all the courses are easy and rudimentary and find the 4.0s others think are impossible very simple. Why? They have an incredible amount of self-control and diligence. A lot of them don't party, they don't watch TV or play video games. Now, I know most people think that's ridiculous and pull out the "All work no play makes Jim a dull boy." But in all reality, in this type of global economy, that type of work ethic is necessary. And that's why even higher-end jobs are going to end in China - America can't compete against extremely well-trained people. And this isn't about cost - sure, they are cheaper - but with the growing trend towards perfect english (look up native English teachers in China, they are very very well-paid), it's about the competancies they have. I'm sure that many companies would be happy to take Chinese engineers on if on cost-parity with American engineers (if not for the PR/Social Compliance issues). This policy is in line with that. I'm sure that we all agree that excessive playing of video games is bad for you. In fact, I have an inkling that a lot of you know that video games are a waste of time - I mean, who's going to die and say they wish they had played more video games. To go even further and FORCE people not to reduces the number of distractions. Children, particularly, have a lot to gain, given that their minds are like sponges. You stick a language in front of them, make it fun, they will pick it up like nothing else. You put a TV next to a book, and they will watch TV. Same with video games. It may be Draconian way of going about it, but should not be a surprise to those who know Chinese educational doctrine well.

And the reason why you are paying a fortune for gas? CHINA and its only gonna get alot worse as China's population 1.3 billion (USA $295 million) buys more cars which doubles or triples each year. viciv
Actually they didn't cut the abilities of game charactors.. if you play more that 5hours, the expirence the charactor gets(for upgrade) will stop increasing.. not cut his level by half rudely. and you need to wait for another 5 hours to let the system reset. Anyway, it's a stupid thing, indeed. They've done many stupid things.. but things are changing, believe me! :) it's gonna test on WOW(world of warcraft) first.. :o Edited August 25, 2005 by viciv

OPEC is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OPEC Simply put, OPEC is a group of petroleum-exporting companies. Every once in a while, they get together and say, "Ok, lets sell our oil at...95$ a barrel." And the world gets screwed.
sin-ergy
I mean, who's going to die and say they wish they had played more video games 586429789[/snapback] Yeah but who's going to die and say they wish they had worked more? One thing I don't understand is why are they all coming here to study? Year after year I find more chinese students in classes. Why bother coming here and spend an extra $3000/year on international tuition fees if they don't feel challenged? I find most of them head back to China anyway after getting their degree.
