Lil' J
Hey Just got rid of a trojan and now looking for something better to browse with, i currently use firefox however other people that use the computer need something to use ( i don't want them using my firefox as i have saved my passwords and all my tabs are personalised for me). Any other browser apart from opera, something that looks basic like IE, but still blocks these adware, trojans, pop ups and so on. Its partly due to my lil sister who's 14 and knows nothing about computers and goes on sites and accidently downloads stuff like from those lyrics sites or any random site that comes up in google. Thanks in advance

markwolfe Veteran Posted August 25, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 25, 2005 Ummm... Use a separate profile for Firefox? Or have a separate XP login. Both of those will prevent your data from being accessed by others. I won't go into my usual lecture about not storing passwords. :p
Andy07
Maxthon is still based on IE so theres still the chance of spyware etc.

GrandMaster
haha all these clueless kids teling u to use ie based browsers... want to prevent spyware? use a relatively unpopular browser. Kmeleon would work best as theres no kmeleon specifc exploits around, but both firefox and opera are pretty safe as well.
firespark
I'd go with something like Firefox, I mean I've been using it for so long and haven't gotten any spyware or adware at all that automatically installs. Of course however that doesn't include spyware/adware installed by software that come with it. Mozilla Firefox is pretty customizable there's no doubt about that.

benjeeeboy
Changing to a different browser will not solve this problem. No browser I know of will stop you from downloading a file or program and then running it. Every browser will allow your sister to download applications with spyware and then run them. The issues that different browsers protect from are exploits and scripts that can install spyware / adware without your permission. Voluntarily downloading spyware and adware won't be stopped by a new browser

cork1958
Opera is the only way to go. Hadn't gotten any adware/spyware in so long, I no longer have Adaware, Spybot or Spywareblaster on ANY of my systems!! Man! I can see where this is going to go!! semifamous
Multiple profiles is really the best way to go in this situation. Everyone can have their own bookmarks and history and stuff. Everything is kept separate.

markwolfe Veteran Posted August 25, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 25, 2005 Do you not prefer using the master password? 586430710[/snapback] Master password? Not sure what this is. I don't store any of my passwords. I do keep track (in case of local brain failure) of them on my PDA. But I do not like automatic password entries. I use a masterpassword as well as an addon to make the master password prompt unseen. Master password prompt will pop up whenever a page is visited that requires a saved password. Masterpassword locks all of your other passwords. So no one will ever know if you have any saved!!

Ambience
Changing up browsers shouldn't really affect the likelihood of your little sister downloading programs you don't want her to. Best method is to probably educate her and tell her about spyware, adware and how to identify it.

Malisk
Yes, by running it as firefox.exe -profilemanager it should use the profile manager. Edit your shortcut properties for that. :) See also: How to use profiles in Firefox
HighOnAmbien
I would suggest using a text based browser such as Lynx. If you want to stop all the bad stuff you haven't much choice. Really.
