Is Firefox bloated?

Recommended Posts

Qualify for ****'s sake.  How many windows? How many tabs? What sites? Are they both loaded to the same site? etc.

Even though this wasn't aimed at me, this is what I get from a new instance of both programs on the same page.

Try to minimize the number of extensions loaded in firefox as possible.

Remove the navigation toolbar and replace it with touch-zone backward forward on synaptics touchpad to maximize the screen view.

Whether it is bloated or not depends on how you configure it.

It is bloated.

Program Files folder and hidden Mozilla folder (yes, using FF) under the Application Data sub folder in Document and Settings(stores the themes and extension support)

These folders can consume a fair bit of space, surprising a large amount.

Memory usage, well we all know about that one.

As far as looks, no, you can customise it how you want.

it only gets that way if your choose to fill it with themes and extensions.... that doesnt mean its bloated, because its your own fault

i wouldnt say firefox is bloated "out-of-the-box", its probably the extensions & themes etc..

I won't say that Firefox is bloated, but its slower than it should be.

Just take a look at Camino. Its a lot faster, in both UI and rendering, even if its using the same Gecko engine!

I wouldn't consider Firefox bloated at all. Only thing I dislike about it is the memory leak problem. Hopefully this is fixed by v1.5.

It's a bit too extreme to think that Firefox it's bloated: unless you think that simplicity is something like Google Talk!

Firefox is not bloated, it's a simple browser that does the job, perhaps is not as responsive as IE in some systems.

It's not difficult at all to get a bloated IE6... just install msn bar :p But IE has always been a simple program too, but some other browsers have proven to be better nowadays.

Opera is a bit bloated too, but the one I don't like AT ALL is maxthon (the good thing about it is that it has a lot of features).

by doing that your only fooling yourself into thinking its not bloated, check the memory usage after you go through all that trouble and youll see what I mean.

Firefox will always be better even if IE7 come out. A friend of my introduce me to Firefox 3years ago and I have never went back to IE, unless I need to update Window, and that's all it's good for. :)

Since you mention Opera being bloated:

I found this picture lying around in My Documents. Can't remember where I got it, but I (sort of) agree with this picture. Also read the 'comments'. They mirror most of these posts in this thread.

You can spin the opera/firefox methods all you want, I regard them as being equally as good as each other, each with their own methods of doing things...

Maybe you fanboys should do the same. You knever know, you may actually learn something.

i don't see how this is relevant....

anyway i wouldn't say firefox is bloated, of course it could be probably sped up with a few tweaks but its fine for most of us

Maybe I would... or I have already. But I still regard that aforementioned picture as the truth.

People like customizing their browsers to some extent - fine. But then explain why it isn't possible to optimize the Firefox code to bring down the file size, and at the same time improve its speed, usage of RAM, and responsiveness. (Even on this system, the menus are sluggish.)

Presto. The engine first existed in version 7, then rewritten for version 8.
