Big Shutdown Problem + Small Desktop Problem

Question

hello fellow neowinians. i need your help. before you read my problems i must tell you that i am quite experienced with computers and the system i am using which is windows xp. i know how to edit the registry well and clean up my computer keep it organized and clean of viruses and etc etc. i also defrag every week or two. my first problem, my main problem, is that recently starting off the past two weeks my computer has been shutting down with an immensily long waiting time. in other words it takes forever to shut down for some reason. i didn't install any dangerous software before that. so i don't think it was any software or anything. so i am not sure what it is which is why i need your help. i have tried using the shut down and restart shortcuts that came with tweak xp. basically the shutdown file in the windows system directory. and i tried shutting down with Start, Turn Off Computer. Stand-by and Hibernate modes both works perfectly. However restart and shut down don't. It does eventually shut down or restart. But everytime it has been doing that i have tried to ctrl+alt+del and nothing happened and i tried to cancel things in my notifications area. you know the area at the very bottom right corner of your desktop and the last part of your start/taskbar. where the programs you run hide sometimes and become an icon and where your volume control icon sits and stuff. yeah that didn't help either. so eventually i just shut it down nowadays and it takes 3-7 min and eventually shuts down. could it be the clearing of the pagefile. if so can someone remind me how to disable/enable that through the registry (regedit.exe). thanks. well that's it last but not least i have a small desktop problem with the interface/gui whatever you wanna call it. you know where the quick launch space is right beside the start button. you can put icon shortcuts to programs you use often and stuff. i stopped using that about a month ago maybe 3 weeks minimum. and now all the the time when i start up or restart or anything it appears there without any icons. but it leaves an empty space and i have to click properties and check the hide quick launch thing all the time. i tried locking/unlocking the taskbar then restarting nothing changed. so those two problems. thanks alot guys in advance for helping me out. bye.

edit. tried to search for some related topics in these forums. found some things to help me out. changed some registries and changed the waittokillapp and waittokillservice to 2000 each from 20000. i also changed the clearpagefile to 0. gonna shutdown now and boot up again and shutdown again. will post how it went in a bit. and if this is supposed to be in operating system help please move this someone thank u.

Off the top of my head, with the shutdown problem, have you disabled the Nvidia Help (took a guess at the name, probably a little different) service? I remember reading somewhere that this can be the cause of many shutdown problems. To disable this service, go to start, then run, then type services.msc - and scroll down to the service and set it to disable. Also, if you wanted to disable/enable to the clearing of the pagefile (although I doubt that it is the problem here) it is located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management with the key being ClearPageFileAtShutdown (1 is to enable, 0 is to disable).

Good luck.

ok shutdown problem fixed. the nvidia help thing i turned off like 2 months ago. i guess it was the waittokillservices and apps registries that i changed from 20000 to 200 that helped. it shuts down in a small/fast 5/6 seconds now. however i still gots the quicklaunch problem. and i've got one more for ya guys. as you can see from my specs under my sig my system isn't that bad. however my boot up time from bios stuff to usable state is around 50/55 seconds. any suggestions on how to make it go faster thanks guys. bye!

I'm not sure what your source is on that but it sounds like rubbish to me, I use it and I never get anything like that, nor have I heard of that problem before (of course it's always possible, but still). Naturally, don't reset whilst it's optimising, but that's a given. :)

I have been using WinXP since release day , and I have noticed that all is fine when you first install , but after a few weeks it gradually gets slower at bootup and shut down.

I have done all the usual clean ups and general house cleaning. I just cannot find any reason for it. Even my last install I have not installed a single Program or App since initial install and again it is starting slow down a little at a time .

The HDD is not fragmented, all *.tmps's are gone . Interent cache cleaned etc etc etc . Its odd , maybe its a feature .

shutdown just took 5+ minutes. ****. it's something. some service or driver or something. not nvidia help or whatever. i stopped that. waittokillservices is set at 5 same with waittokillapps the pagile file exec is not disabled and the paging file is not set to clear on shutdown. this is ****ing weird. when i went into task manager (ctrl+alt+del) and closed alot of stuff it shutdown in 5 seconds. ****. well going to bed bye.

OK GUYS. I CHECKED THE WINDOWS START-UP ITEMS USING SYSTEM MECHANIC AND GOT RID OF A COUPLE. I THINK MY SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN WELL 5 SECONDS NOW AND STARTS UP FASTER BECAUSE OF THAT AND USING BOOTVIS. I GOT 41 SECONDS INSTEAD OF THE 50+ I USED TO GET. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP SO FAR. JUST NEED TO FIGURE OUT THE QUICKLAUNCH PROBLEM. DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING ON GOOGLE OR K-BASE AT MICROSOFT.COM. I SEARCHED THROUGH THE REGISTRY AS WELL FOR QUICKLAUNCH AND BAR AND STUFF NOTHING CAME UP. SO HELP ME WITH THIS SMALL PROBLEM PLEASE. HOW TO GET RID OF YOUR QUICKLAUNCH BAR SO IT DOESN'T KEEP COMING BACK AND TAKING UP TASKBAR SPACE. **** sorry for the caps too.
