My Lite-on CD writer will not go into DMA mode!!

Recommended Posts

U guys (ladies too :cheeky: ) are brilliant so I figured I'd for some help. I just built a new system (ABit NV7-133R Mobo, Athlon XP 1900+) and the cd-writer will not go into DMA mode. On the past 2 computers i've used the cd-writer in, I had no problems with this at all. I have both boxes under 2ndary IDE Device set to DMA if availible, but still it says the cd-writer is in PIO mode. The cd-writer is the slave on the 2ndary IDE port, the master is a Pioneer DVD-ROM and it goes into DMA mode perfectly. The irritating thing is that whenever I burn a cd, the entire computer slows down and i've noticed it even takes longer to burn cds. I have the Nforce Chipset drivers installed.. any ideas anyone? Thanks for the help.. :dead:

mmm, since I don't have nForce I cannot be sure if this will work with you, but if you are bored, give it a shot:

in device manager, go to ide ata/atapi controllers, then check to see if you have any bus master ide controller. if you do, remove it and reboot. windows should redetect and install the proper drivers, etc. Hope that'll work for ya

The only other thing Under IDE ATA/ATAPI besides Primary IDE Channel and Secondary IDE Channel is Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller. Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

I always have been told that a writer should be master.

And it did solve many problems already.

I suggest you switch the DVD and the writer.

I have almost the same config

MSI K7N420 (nforce) + 2 HD + Pioneer DVD + Lite On burner 32/12/40 and things work great here.

IDE 1 = 2 HD

IDE 2 = master = burner, slave = DVD

Yeah i'll try switching them in a bit... once i wake up a bit more.. i feel like this little guy: :dead:

Another question for the Nforce owners, i'm getting an identical stick of RAM, and i was wondering if that Twinbank memory thing makes any difference in performance.

Thanks

Same thing happening here.

Did you recently flash the firmware on the CD-Writer ?

Mine was DMA before doing this, and now it is PIO as well.

Just looking for a common thread here to lead to this.

Mine will not come out of PIO as well even though DMA is selected.

Let me know, as if you have flashed the firmware recently, I think we have a winner as to why it is performing as it is.

No.. I haven't.. maybe that will bring a solution to my problem though (ha! probably not..oh well). The only thing I did was remove the CD-wrter from my old Pentium 4 system and put it in my new Athlon XP 1900+ system. Where can I get a firmware update for the Lite-On cd-writer? 16x10x40

Thanks!!!

I have several questions

1. Are the liteon burners any good because I WAS planning on getting one tomorrow but over the last cpl days ive seen some threads with this type brand name doing dogey stuff, so are they any good at all?

2. What the hell is this nforce stuff?

3. With my old burner the only way I could ever get it into DMA mode was to install poweder dvd which had a setup option to enable DMA on selected drives

what other ways do you enable DMA?

Thanks.

after you finish flashing your bios, go into your bios and set your ide channel to DMA. somewhere in the BIOS it will ask you if you want to set your drives to DMA mode. hope this helps
