I use the numeric keypad, it's far more ergonomical, you won't hit the wrong keys and easier to remember.

Yeah tell me you like pressing L with your left hand while you are pressing WSAD!

Well, which do you like to you in game movement? The Letters W, A, S, and D or the arrow keys. I think that the WASD buttons are better because you're close to more buttons than the arrow keys. Thus, you can assign more keys for your game.

a quick fact: most fps games default WASD as the direction keys.

i personally use RDFG so my pinky can reach more keys compared to WASD

My pinky isn't as talented as yours, so I'll stick with WASD

I just use WASD and learn the other controls. I don't remap anything, just leave it at default and remember the controls for each game.

Plus I only really play Counterstrike, Doom3, and Fear anyway.

Get yourselves a Nostromo n52 and your all set, its the best device I ever picked up for gaming. I did a review many years ago of the n50, and never looked back.

I takes a couple of hours to get used to, and after that, you will wonder how you ever played games without it.

i use WASF so that D can be crouch. i find it a little better for me anyway because each finger can control a form of movement without another finger losing a form movement. my pinky can always strafe the character left. my index finger can always strafe the character right. my middle finger always controls crouching. and my ring finger controls moving forward and backward (it can share two movements because you never move forward and backward at the same time). i use E for my 'use' button and R to reload. both of these buttons share a movement finger but generally you quickly press 'reload' or quickly press 'use' to do something and it doesnt interfere much moving around.

WASD for me nowadays, but back in the day when games didn't require a mouse I always used the arrow keys.
