Axon
Klein steps up sabre-rattling on oil revenue Friday, August 26, 2005 EDMONTON, CALGARY -- Alberta Premier Ralph Klein warned yesterday that politicians who consider themselves "great Canadians" will "keep your hands off" the western province's swelling coffers, which could see its surplus soar to $7-billion this year."If they are the great Canadians that they profess to be, then they'll leave us alone and respect the Constitution," he said. "We are doing more than our fair share, so keep your hands off," Mr. Klein said, later adding that other provinces could keep up to Alberta by becoming more economically competitive. Source: The Globe and Mail ------------------ I think he's been in office a little too long. Alberta seems to be a little greedy now that it's so rich. They live in a province of no taxes, while parts of Newfoundland starve. Real noble there Ralph. -Ax
Fred Derf Veteran Posted August 29, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 29, 2005 Alberta is a boom and bust economy. It wouldn't be fair to rewrite the rules when they are booming.

By all means start a charity and have Albertans _voluntarily_ give their money to Newfoundlanders. It is Klein's job to protect the interests of Albertans, and he's doing a fine job of it. Fred Derf Veteran Posted August 29, 2005 Veteran Share Posted August 29, 2005 Newfoundland may soon become the 3rd richest province per capita (once they start receiving their share of off-shore oil revenue).

Axon
I guess my views are a little too liberal. But don't count me as someone on the outside, I was born and raised in Alberta, and only recently moved to BC. I have never liked Ralph Klien's attitude toward the rest of Canada. I think he's right to keep his own oil money, but he dissapoints me when he starts asking the Federal Gov't for more funding. To me, he's got a bit of a seperatist kind of feel. He almost boasts that Alberta could make it on its own. -Ax

Only Alberta and Ontario reliably contribute to the rest of Canada. And Ontario can only do it by running a deficit.
