Just wrote this "smashing" article:

MSDN Subscribers got a surprise today! The WinFS (Windows File System) Beta 1 was made available to MSDN Subscribers, today. The release will enable developers to start work on WinFS?s capabilities. According to several press reports today, WinFS will be made available to PDC (Professional Developer Conference) attendes.

The final version of WinFS will be released a few months after Windows Vista ships. The RTM (Release to Manufacturing) of WinFS will include support for both Windows Vista and probably Windows XP. WinFS will be available as a download add-in for the .NET Compact Framework.

WinFS Beta 1 weighs in at 76MB.

WinFS Beta 1 is currently only available to MSDN Subscribers, and probably will be available to PDC Attendes.

I thought it would probably be in MS Connect but I just checked and it's not. I have MVP and Dev access too. So I guess it just is MSDN. So, is this like a whole file system update or... what?

It's called Windows Future Storage... not Windows File System...

why do people INSIST on making that same mistake?

Is this a replacement for NTFS?

No,

From front page:

WinFS is essentially an SQL database layer that sits on top of the NTFS file system. With it, files and data are abstracted and can be access not just more quickly but in many different ways. Some speculate that WinFS may first appear on the server edition of Windows Vista and when coupled with a WinFS enabled client, would allow seamless organization of files and data across a network.

Well I've installed it on three machines:

  • A P4@3.06GHz with 1GB of memory
  • An Athlon 64 3400+@2.41GHz with 1.5GB of memory
  • An Athlon 64 4000+@2.39GHz with 2GB of memory

Now of course this is beta, so bugs are to be expected and the fact this this beta came absolutely out of no where, but it is extremely slow on all three of these systems. I experienced a lot of lock ups, extremely slow systems that were working fine before I installed this. The performance seems more like an pre-alpha beta, rather then a beta 1

It's an add-on that sits on top of NTFS. It's supposed to increase dramatically the average search times, for example.

I wasn't expecting a release now ! Woot ! :D

I'd say it was more like a Lambda-Lambda-Lambda, or perhaps an Omicron-Mu.
