Shagin099
Well that explanation is sort of right, but not really. LDDM is indeed the Longhorn Display Driver Model. Devices with LDDM drivers have components to make them work with Longhorn's DWM and possibly other features in the future. DWM though, is far more than just a registry key. DWM facilitates the off screen rendering of the entire screen by the display card before it is displayed on the screen. This includes all the new effects, but also means less CPU usage to display the GUI, and it means a smoother visual experiance.
Hais
is it still going to be called the Longhorn Display Driver Model now that they've released the name Vista?
stadsport
Wouldn't surprise me if it did. WinXP still has traces of "Whistler" all over it.

Commodore Max
DWM is the base of the Aero theme, it's what controls and runs the beautiful effects Vista will offer. DWM is represented by the process uxss.exe in the Task Manager.
Menge
alright... LDDM: Longhorn Display Driver Model. It is a set of specifications for video card manufacturers so that they make their video cards and drivers in a way that Microsoft thinks is the best way for Windows Vista and its new Direct3D specifications. DWM: Desktop Window Manager. It's a new feature of Windows Vista. It's used to draw the desktop to the screen. This new feature enables off-screen drawing (no flicker) and enables various effects like 3d transformations to the windows and transparencies and other nifty eye-candy. In order to enable DWM you need a LDDM-capable video card. That's it.
