Western Digital's HD's are the biggest piece of **** invented!

I went through 3 of them before switching to Maxtor, no problems so far.

i've been using computers for like 6 years and i've never had an hd die on me

You've been lucky, I've had two drives die on me. I've been using computers for 13 years now :)

I've dealt with hundreds of drives with my business and this is what I've seen.

Maxtor drives are just plain cheap, the plastic is even brittle and its not rare to lose everything on a drive. Several drives had controller issues, and some would come up as slave or master no matter what. Maxtor drives also tend to have a reputation for getting bad sectors over time

Western Digital are much better than maxtor IF you buy a higher end drive. They are not cheaply made but they do have a reputation for being sensitive to environments (aka fragile). The higer end drives are the ones you will most likely never have a problem with, like the WD1200JB

Seagate drives are extremely reliable but they seem to be behind everyone else with HD development. They run extremely quiet and generally last a long time.

Overall, if your buying a high end drive, definately get western digital, otherwise I would go with seagate. If your daring, try maxtor, but don't invest too much money in a drive from them.

I lost an IBM 60GB 60GXP about 3 months after I got it. It didn't have anything on it yet, so I got really really lucky. In fact, it's still bolted into my system :D

Oddly enough, I have two 75GXPs stacked on top of each other and neither has given out yet. They're supposed to be the crappy ones too :D

Had a Quantum 10 gig drive in my first PC ever. It lasted for a couple of years (before I evolved into the geek I am today), and I lost most of my stuff. Took it to the shop to have them fix it (greedy *******s! they rip you off!) and got it back about a week later. But ehh, we got a 14.2 gig drive in it after.

I built about a dozen computers for a local company and 7 of the hard drives spontaneously died.

All the PCs were using high end parts like ATI and Abit but the IT manager requested Fujitsu 10 gig drives.

I typicall prefer WD or Quantum (Maxtor now:( )

oh man!

I've had 3 maxtor drives (40gb) die on me in the past two months... had them all replaced too! Have one maxtor that works and an IBM drive that has never given me a problem.

This list is long:

1) Seagate ST3491A 427 MB HDD....... 16 MB's of bad sectors before a head disconnected inside. I can still hear it shaking around here (HDD is sitting on my desk).

2) IBM DSAA-3540 527 MB HDD......... bearing cracked after continuous use for 8 years. Finally retired it today from my server :)

3) Maxtor DiamondMax 6800 27.2 GB HDD........... wouldn't take any true 32-bit operating system (Win2K, WinXP or WinNT)...... turned out there was a logic error in the lucent chip that controls I/O. Drive no longer works.

4) Fujitsu 2.62 GB HDD.......... motor spontaneously quit one day (think it was because of lightning strike that surged that poor PC).

5) Quantum 1.6 GB HDD........ Drive mount in cheap Full Tower AT (yes... AT) case fell 36" to bottom of case, denting HDD casing and putting a hole in the bottm of my poor case. The HDD never worked right after that.... but made this cool buzzing noise whenever you turned it on :)

Currently, I'm using a total of 8 Maxtor DiamondMax D540XL 160 GB Drives for a total storage capacity of 1.280 Terabytes.

That's the extent of hard drive failures I've enjoyed in my 15 years of computing.

Thats *exactly* the same as me, except they died over a 20 month period, not 2. So, erm, not exactly the same then. But close.

My IBM is running like a star now though, and the maxtor is used just for holding installations of games, I won't risk anything important on it.

All my computers and all the computers I've built for the family have had WD.

My used 6 gb WD that I gave to my mom died about a yr later but I was about to slave it to my main drive and save everything.

A 13gb WD got the clicking death w/i the warranty pd. I got a replacement and was able to move the data to the new drive.

That's it for me. I'm VERY happy with my WDs and I'll continue to use them.

This J drive problem is a booger for me but I still have hope for it. I'm PRETTY sure it's not a HD failure. But then it's been 5 days in recovery....

anita, slowly losing hope

Lost 2 here, wish you'd had checkboxes -

Western Digital 6gb out of a Gateway - sent me a replacement but I lost everything

IBM 75gxp 45gb - these things really must be bad - started buzzing/data corruption, seems to work fine now but i don't use it cause i'm afraid it'll die and i'll lose something important - running maxtor 80gb as a replacement
