Why would you switch to Vista?

No serieusly,

Why would you?

Its obviously gonna eat more Memory then XP because of all the effects.

And i doubt Internet Explorer 7 is gonna be super secure.

And think about the price its gonna pay!

What will make you switch to Vista?

XP obviously ate more system resources than 2000/ME/98/95/3.1. Times are changing.

Of course IE 7 isn't secure, but IE 6 is worse, is that a reason to stick with XP?

..and the last time I bought Windows was in 2002. I'm sure sending MS ?80 or whatever every 4 years to be able to use my computer isn't that bad. (compatability wise, I know I could use linux [and I do] but as far as compatability goes, I'll have to stick with windows, especially for gaming)

Here's reasons to go with Vista:

Soon MS will stop supporting XP

New software and hardware will not work with XP anymore, or have limited support. But you could always stick with your old hardware. But if we all did that, we'd all still have 486s.

New computers will be shipped with Vista

Valid reasons not to get Vista:

Security wise, you might aswell get linux

You might need to upgrade some of your PCs parts. But thinking about it, if you want to be able to use new applications, you'd need a more powerful computer anyway.

Other reasons not to get Vista:

The reasons you listed

MiCroSoFt R TEH DEVIL!!!

Bill Gates might be a billionaire, but he still looks like a geek.

Pretty sums up my view on it. Upgrade or get left behind.

The reason I'm updating to vista is because of the limited monitor support for HD content. I really don't like being able to use current gen monitors. I mean I love my current monitor, but I guess it is time to buy a new one and throw this perfectly good one away! /sarcasm

Yes, because of secutiry, IE7, networking. I built my new computer so I could run it. When XP came out no computer I had ever used could run it well. I'll be getting it for only $20.

I don't know if i'll run vista when it goes final because vista just bloated ware on windows xp... But however, i might run longhorn server x86 version. Which is what i'm using right now and i find it much much faster then vista and xp.

Its like a kid in a candy store compared to 5048. I would agree the speed of browsing is faster then XP and security even at beta 1 is probably more secure then XP. Of course this is debatable. Personally beta 1 has been more like taking the corvette convertable out for the weekend drive to show off a little bit. For everyday driving however its XP for reliability and using all my programs.

I'm actually thinking about switching to Linux also, been trying to ween myself from Windows. I have no use for DRM and such and can't continue to use XP after support for it ends, that basically forces you to switch to a new OS after support for it ends.

Stability - Windows 2003 Server code base with the same development process as Windows 2003 Server and many enhancements like driver protection (those that are known to cause stability problems will prompt the user to warn them that they are known to cause problems) and hot-patching that reduces the amount of reboots by ~75%.

Security - The same concepts (least privileges required for applications to complete their tasks) used in Mac OS X and Linux are being applied to Windows Vista. The firewall will feature outbound protection and will be semi-intelligent (it learns of internet-based exploits and closes ports to prevent successful attacks and returns the ports to their previous state once a patch has been installed.) Like mentioned earlier, the underlying code base will feature the security enhancements made with Windows 2003 Server and the new development process will surely help (when switching from the XP development model to the 2003 Server development model, they seen a reduction of vulnerabilities by ~400%.)

Data Management - Windows Vista will make it easier to organize, find, and backup data. You can use the instantaneous desktop search to find files. You can use virtual folders (saved searches) to organize files and have them always organized (since everytime you visit the folder it is like running the search again.) You can use "shadow" folders for data that you wish to have backed-up, the folder can be reverted to a previous state in no time at all. Windows Vista also features a global RSS data store for all applications to take advantage of and share with eachother, so RSS-enabled applications will be more cooperative and require less end-user maintenance.

Improved Hardware Support - I don't know about anyone else, but I will likely buy the hybrid hard-drives when they are first released at an affordable price. I also plan to migrate over to a multi-core system (perhaps dual-core dual-processor Opteron setup) and the improved hardware scalability will be nice. Hybrid hard drives and multi-tasking are important things to me.

Improved Gaming - Interoperability with Xbox 360's controllers, DirectX 10 (that brings unified shader architecture capabilities to the PC, better performance, better antialiasing, etc.), unnecessary services/applications are unloaded when starting fullscreen games so games will have more performance available to them, games will begin behaving similarly to consoles because you simply insert the CD and the game starts, parental controls on the games, the new Games Explorer that makes it easy to find all of the games installed on the system, etc.

I can keep naming reasons for why I will be switching to Windows Vista; however, I feel the above reasons are more than enough.

OK iam no computer genius, i but think everyone should change to vista.

it will not run slower than xp, why would microsoft spend years in developmeant to make an os that runs slower than the one before it, and the glass effects shouldn't slow it down if you have a decent computer for the times. I think alot of people don't seem to realise the glass effects are there to show that vista can run nicely even with some 3d effects running. Vista is also being made to run nicely with games.

mainly stability. XP is already pretty stable but sometimes theres a crash here or there.

But maybe i'm just abit compulsory when it comes to software, i tend to like ot be up to date with everything. Pretty difficult with hardware though, that's why i don't bother...
