I would have to file mine in "umpteenmillion times". There was only a 70+ option, so I went with that. Of course, this is over my entire computing carreer. It also includes the computer that had the following problems:

- Floppy virii - way back before email virii

- Bad ram sticks - yes, that is plural

- The arm jumped and broke through the platter - that caused a nice sound

- A really weird worm that caused the icons to jump around by themselves - you couldn't click on them because they kept moving

- Failed installations of Caldera Linux - yes, the olden days

- Replaced with Red Hat - not really a problem, but required a format

And all of those were just off the top of my head on one computer. I still have it on a shelf in my closet.

A Happy XP Home or Pro Guide...

1.) start with a clean pc (hard drive fresh) find a killdisk program google.

only start with 1 hard drive , 1 cdrom or dvd .videocard ,no modem, sound card or etc.

off course as allways turn that network card off or remove it.

2.) install xp,reboot ,1st thing first chipset drivers ,reboot video drivers reboot

now clean temo dir including (doccuments and setting /user/local/temp) setup xp interface how you like to use it,then update xo winupdate.

anyone like me to finish this guide let me know this is thru my own experience and lots of web reading:)

I have had a lot of hard drives over the years. I have had many partitions and OS's installed.

Right now I have

Kubuntu Hoary

Kubuntu Breezy

Suse 9.3

Redhat 6.2

Windows XP

Windows Vista beta 1

on this computer. I'm always installing OS's and messing around with them. I've got 2 250 gig disks now, so I'm going to be experimenting even more.

I've formated my computer (Hp Pavilion 761n from 2002) about 10-20 times. Ya, used to format every 3 months but then I figured out just last year why my computer was always screwing up. It turns out my Wacom Tablet's drivers kept screwing my computer up so I got rid of the tablet (It's actually in a box somewhere in my basement) and my computer's been running flawlessly for just about a year.

Only one format per HD.

I use Norton Ghost if I ever need to restore an image to a drive.

Really can't believe you ppl still reformat. Don't you have anything better to do?

There isn't much difference between a format and a re-write of an entire partition... :ermm:

For my current hard drives:

1 time when I installed win98 back then on a k6-II (I'm still using that HD).

1 time when I installed winxp some years latter (actually just resized the existing partition and added a 3GB one for xp).

1 time when I installed Mandrake8.2 (on a new drive).

1 time when I installed RedHat9 (over the Mandrake partition).

1 time when I installed Gentoo (over the RedHat partition)

1 time when I splitted my fat32 partion in two ReiserFS partitions in order to get more space for linux.

That makes 6 times, doesn't it?

I've never formated any partition/HD just to install the same old stuff again.

Over 20times at least.

When younger, used to reformat every 2 weeks without fail. Tweaking and experimenting did that.

Now, i use ghost, original install was 29 Dec 2004, used ghost bout 3 times on this due to tweaking/bad bad drivers etc. So yeh
