i tried opera, and im keeping it but the page rendering is faulty. with firefox its just the odd browser code change and activex page that stops it being perfectly useable, because gecko seems so adaptable but with opera my ISPs homepage wouldnt let me log in, and that is a major page. it was good for lots of things but not compatible enough. i liked the speed though :)

I know what you mean. Here is a perfect example site in the wallpaper section [ Open with Firefox, then try Opera ] Opera doesn't seem to load the page content correctly. I think I'll have to stick with FF. I don't like the idea that when I visit a webpage that I'm missing half the content and don't even know it.

nope, cuz i switched months ago.

i never liked Firefox but i always liked the sheer speed Opera had (both in the UI and the browsing). the only drawback it had before version 8.0 was page support. now things look and behave properly, it's still one of the browsers with the highest standards support, and the i can't get enough of the speed of this thing. coming from Maxthon, i can never go back to the IE engine and not planning to switch to Firefox until it's comparable to Opera in speed performance.

You do realise that if you bought 7.x, your serial will already work in v8 right?

What is the best PDA available in terms of cost that is compatible with OS X??  I want to use it for storing medical information like drug interactions and diagonising software.

I tried it with the free code and didn't like it better than safari with saft. Especially since it jumps when scrolling with my PowerBooks two finger scrolling.

Try clicking on the wallpapers section. When using FF the wallpapers are there, with Opera there is nothing but empty space.

Firefox: When you click on the menu selection on the left different wallpapers appear in the main window.

Opera: When you click on the menu selection on the left, nothing happens in the main window. Not even an error indicating that there should be something there.

And this isn't the first site I've had this happen with. I just can't remember others right now. And I understand that it is usually at the fault of the webpage builder for not making it standards compliant, but I don't like that I have no indication of what isn't showing up correctly. I really do like Opera because of it's speed and stability, but I don't like missing content and not knowing it. To each their own I guess.

here's what i get on my old Firefox i had lying around here (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.5) Gecko/20041107 Firefox/1.0).

ffox2.jpg

i know i need to update, but since i don't use it, i never had the need to.

as you can see, the wallpaper section doesn't display properly on this version either. i'm guessing the designer is using some very advanced and new Firefox-only features, since Maxthon (IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) displays exactly the same as Opera, but you can't expect better from IE.

but, i see what you mean. just remember, Opera is still a very far 3rd contender on the browser list. Firefox is ahead in the "advanced" user base and Mozilla is shooting for the knowledgeable user, while Opera is going for a mainstream user. still, the Opera team is doing wonders in supporting their own engine and writing such an outstanding application.

//EDIT: just updated Firefox to 1.06 and the output's the same. could be me, though. can someone else confirm this?

Again, Shift + 12, use the 'Windows native' skin, and you can have close buttons on each tab, having one at the end is just silly, did you actually use it? I thought everyone used the middle click button to close tabs anyways, much easier

And no, i didn't switch from Firefox, i switched from IE the day i discovered opera 7 ;)

I did that the tabs are still huge.

I tried it for a couple days, but there are too many things about Opera where it differs from every other browser on basic functions.

586467777[/snapback]

yea, i agree with that. but remember you can customize pretty much anything you don't like. all the shortcuts are customizable, as is the most advanced Mouse Gestures feature. you can make custom buttons for pretty much anything you can think of. granted, not to the level you can fiddle with Firefox, but it's pretty advanced for a browser that has every feature you'd need straight from the box.

to this day, there's just one thing i miss in Opera: the tab focus order. when i middle click on a tab to close it, i want the tab on the left to be focused, yet instead it brings me to the last viewed tab. that's not wrong, just it's not the way i like it. i have CTRL+W set to focus page on left though, and i have a button for it, i just miss the good ol' middle click to do it. but that's something i've learned to live without, and it's a minimal sacrifice to make for everything else it offers.

Firefox is still a better browser feature-wise, in the customization department, community and standards support, but it's too clunky, resource hungry and slow for my needs. Opera has everything i want, nothing more, nothing less. it's really up to everyone to decide what's better for them, there's no absolute best browser. i just wish i could have the features and customization of Firefox with the speed, GUI, usability and stability of Opera. that'd be the optimum browsing experience. :woot:

I totally love the skins management in Opera, this surpasses any browser out there. You can simply surf and look at all the available skins from within Opera and even download and install them without even opening one tab, you can simply do the entire thign via the shift+F12 window, I love that.

No, as I've been using Opera almost full time ever since June.

Firefox's sole purpose is to sit in the shadows, waiting for Opera to implement some innovative feature so somebody can rip it off months later with an extension.

Talk about embrace, extend, and extinguish.

Quite true. As long as those in the Mozilla community don't bullcrap about 'inventing' anything, I could care less if they took features from Opera to improve their browser.

On a positive note, that Opera skin for Firefox looks awesome.

With all the pros and cons of both FF and Opera it's kinda hard to decide.

I think I'll give Opera another run a bit longer...

Even with the few cons it has, it's hard to resist the speed of Opera...it's uberfast :D

Besides, I find it much easier to get support from the Opera community, on their site, anytime I have a technical question.

As far as the webpage thing I previously posted; I've decided to look at things this way - "If a webpage doesn't load correctly in Opera, than it isn't worth going to".

Hrm that site seems to work fine in IE.

You do realise you have to click a link on the left for the wall to appear on the right don't you?

Is it just me or are so many settings in opera hidden away? Where do you configure proxy servers? Because at work I'm getting "The proxy server requested a login authentication method that is not supposrted."

Proxy servers are setup under the Advanced tab in preferences and network leaf. However, it's likely that you've run into the reason corporations don't use Opera much - it doesn't support NTLM authentication. Please go to their forums in wishlist and complain/wish for support.

Hmmm I was already a Opera user but I used to use Avant Browser more. I got my code (and 1 extra!) and then without the ad... Opera looks much more better and more clean. So now I use Opera more but now I am debating between Avant Browser and Opera. I am using Opera much more now but a few problems are keeping me back. So the answer to the poll question is no for me since I was already a Opera user.
