(Maybe sell it on it ebay. ***Any other suggestions***) OK well I want a good computer but it would be really helpful if someone could reply with all the peices im gonna need. (I know I will need a processor, ram, cd drives, etc. but could someone go through a sorta checklist for me) So pretty much whats the cheapest way to make a pimp machine for gaming? Also where are some good places to shop (store or online)

ck2k01
what does OEM stand for?
username
OEM is what is sold to the manufactures, does not come in a nice box and packaging, directions, manual, usually not as much warranty and cheaper oh yeah OEM stands for original equipment manufacture
liar2
OEM is usually a beautiful thing. Who wants to pay for the nice packaging anyways?
drewster2100
www.pricewatch.com will be a great place to get started
lawtai
pricewatch is a good place, but be careful of the different online retailers as they're not always reliable. www.newegg.com is a very good place to get parts from. It's a very reliable online retailer too. To get the best bang for your buck, I'd get a KT266A board, an Athlon 1800+, a geforce ti3200, and 256 2100 ddr ram to begin with. ck2k01
alrite im searchin around newegg and i was wonderin what kind of the following you suggest to purchase: -Soundcard -Videocard -Powesupply -Motherboard -CPU (this is your processor rite?) i dont really understand how the mobo and powersupply work together with the CPU (im thinkin bout gettin AMD 1.8-2.5 ghz). zivan56
You cant get an AMD that is above 1.8ghz (2100+) or whatever speed it is. Best thing is to buy a 1.8Ghz P4 (Northwood) and overclock it right away to 2.2Ghz. Since the multiplyer is locked (18x) set your FSB to 122Mhz. Or if you have the money get a 2.0A and overclock it to 2.5 Ghz, thats what I did :D
lawtai
generally you'll get a power supply when you buy your case. You'll definitely want a 300W power supply at least. I'd suggest an antec or an enlight case. For sound card, you could prolly do with a creative labs soundblaster live 5.1 OEM card.

whipper25
generally, you don't want to be too tight with your money when it comes to building a computer..especially for a vid card or the cpu..you'll want to buy the best one you can get, even if its a little more than you would like to spend...don't save money and buy a cheaper one, because in a few months that more expensive vid card/cpu will drop down in price and a new, more powerful one will come out.. unless you have the cash to buy another new comp the next year, always try to get the best parts..its worth it in the long run.. good luck! putting together your own PC isn't as hard as it seems..its pretty simple and straight forward..just make sure you thinks things through first before you put things into action ;)
ck2k01
:) thx i was wonderin whats the differences between the different types of harddrives (ide, scsi, etc. and the different types of rams-which one do i want?)
zivan56
You probably want an IDE drive (unless you can afford scsi), the best ram to get is PC2100 DDR-SDRAM (in terms of price). SCSI (Small Computer System Interface) is usually used for huge amounts of data transfer, a haddrive that is 20GB and 10000RPM costs around $400, while an 7200rpm IDE ATA133 160GB costs less than that. zivan56
That PC-133 ram is a serious bottleneck, and costs about the same as DDR-SDRAM. If you want to overclock it you need DDR-SDRAM PC2100 minumum and and to overclock you need an ASUS or MSI, or other brand name motherboard. ck2k01
ok upgraded ram to what u suggested and am looking at mobos now
lawtai
You could save some money by getting case with a power supply in it, and getting OEM for the burner/dvd drives. Also for motherboard, I'd suggest the Asus P4T, I think that's what it's called. Not exaclty sure about pentium mobo's, but I know that Asus has had really good quality Pentium boards. username
do some research, check out hardware review sites, this is not something you want to get decided on thread on neowin, is should take a few days a least to think everything out, know what you are doing, and finally get the feeling that you got the best deal for your buck. Winston
just keep searching around dont buy your parts all at the same place some shops sell it cheaper... if your not a hardcore game player go for the nforce i think it was from leadtek i think its the topest nforce ive ever seen and its called all integrated sound and video which is very good and just grab a pc2100 512 ddr ram stick and for the hdd u should be able to grab a seagate baracuda ata iv 7200 rpm 80 gig for pretty cheap (some say seagate is crap but hell its excellent and its very quiet) and for the cpu i reackon a 1800 xp + is sufficient if ur not that much or a hardcore game player and if u want a burner grab the liteon 48 x its a ripper and yeah thats all you need to build your comp and basically a case as of your choice that supports amd motherboards and get a PSU that at least has around 350 and the rest is basically up to u keyboard , mouse, monitor, modem etc all up to u.. zivan56
I would say the P4 P4S533 (SIS645DX, DDR333, Lan, Sound) (Which is $175 CDN) is a pretty good bargain. It has support for DDR333 (PC2700 DDR-SDRAM).
