CNN's Anderson Cooper scolds Loisiana politician

The reason it's so hard is because it's against the Constitution. The state and local governments are in charge, and the Federal government is only there to assist. Yes, they can't do anything without Federal funding, but the fact is that the blame for inaction rests with the local leaders. Nothing is wrong with the system, it's the people. I love LA, but the politicians that the people of that state elect are the worst in the country. Want proof? Look at NY during 9/11. That was all Rudy. BTW - I think that our governor and mayors here in MS are doing a wonderful job. Another good example of the Democratic system working.

No - Bush can't do a single thing himself physically. But by going down there he can help the citizens of that state know that the most powerful man in the world has them at the forefront of his mind. That's a very strong physcological thing when you are about to lose your mind.

But in the end, Bush going down there, wasting resources, is still useless. I bet he won't be having the 2 bottles of water and that crappy food they're passing out to everyone else at the N.O. Superdome.

Would you rather he NOT go down there? The reason it helps that he go down there is people WANT him down there. The problems with evacuating local people has nothing to do with the federal government - the governor of the state and the mayor are the only ones who do stuff like that. You guys just take politics too far sometimes. The problem is that the mayor and the governor had no plan for this. The federal government assists the state and local governments in these efforts - and that is slow because there was no plan.

I'm just wondering if you heard of this nice little thing called FEMA? It's the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Now I bolded federal because it's a federal agency, not a local or state agency and they should have their asses down their right now!! But nobody has seen or heard anything from them. Right now on the news all the stations are calling the people in New Orleans refugees, do you know what that means? Pretty much we have a third world nation right in our own country now. So excuse me when I say I can give two sh*ts about everyone else in the world right now and I want to see our government do for their own people what they have been for every other government and country in the world. Which is another great point. WHERE THE HELL IS EVERONE ELSE?!? We bail their asses out of a jam everytime something happens to them but as soon as somehting ike this happens to us, it's "Good luck with that." Sorry for being for being mad but right now I have no respect for our government.

For what reason, so he can maybe lift a piece of lumber and say he helped?  He aint gonna do ****, because it'll mess up his tux!  They're telling us that we need to "conserve" oil, yet he just wasted 2 round trips to and from New Orleans?  I think he needs to eat his own damn words!

Ugh...would you guys make up your minds? First you want him there, then you don't want him there....

That is 100% spot on. Bush is just the easy target for people who don't really know how state and local governments should work.

I've heard people blame Bush for the levee system there.

People want the Government out of our lives, and when something like this happens, they then wish they were involved.

The simple response to your comment is that you're right, people do want less government involvment in their lives, but since they are so involved I want them to fuc*ing do something!! If they were less involved in my life I wouldn't expect anything from them, but since I pay so many bloody taxes for the government I expect something from them otherwise I rather just flush my tax money down the toilet since that is pretty much the same as paying taxes if the government doesn't do anything for those taxes.

Its pretty standard for presidents to tour disaster sites, why the hate?

Being from Louisiana all I can say is that ALL RECENT PRESIDENTS - Clinton, Bush 1, current Bush -, Governor Blabino Blanco, Mayor Ray Nagin, and the LOCAL and FEDERAL gov't share the blame for this diaster. Everybody here has known for years about the crappy levee system guarding N.O. and nothing has ever been done about it - except cut funding for USACE projects to shore the levees up. They finally got caught with their collective pants down...

Hey Cooper Anderson (not that he will ever read this): As if your little "angry man" act fooled anyone. Man, you really changed our political system by tongue lashing our Senator!!!

 Welcome to Louisiana politics!

FEMA:

To achieve its vision, FEMA will work to prepare the Nation for disasters by encouraging individuals, governmental entities, and public and private groups at all levels to become informed of the risks they face, to make decisions that help keep people, property, and institutions out of harm?s way, and to possess the capability and knowledge needed to act when disasters occur.

FEMA works with the local governments (usually they start with the state letter and then EMA, like MEMA (Mississippi Emergency Management Association)) to provide assistance. It works best that way because the local government has more knowledge of their needs then the federal government. Our government is doing as much, I think - it's just that we're seeing it right here in our own backyard. Plus there is hardly no coverage of the areas were the mot work is being done. All we see on the news is New Orleans. It takes me searching to find enough news about places like Long Beach, Gulfport, Waveland, etc.

wow, just wow. anderson has earned so many respect points from me now. i used to think he was a pawn like most people in the media, but it seems now that at least he has some guts to announce and critizise those who need it. finally for once i have witnessesd a person in the modern day media stand up for the people, not the government.
