I'm pretty ****ed at Microsoft. If this are the min. requirements none of the computer in my house will run vista. Now I'm a linux fan boy, but two other computer 1.4 Intel M and a 2.8 HT Intel won't be able to run it maybe the 2.8 HT Intel but for sure not the laptop. At this point I'm not gonna upgrade I'm gonna have to fight my parents to dual boot linux in a year or two after vista come out cause there will be a lack of support for xp. I would like to build a gaming machine for my self one day but that not gonna happen with in the next few years. The specs are just crazy. I dunno about you but microsoft has really shown they don't care about there customers. Who the hell gonna want to pay 1 grand to run vista? Not I. Most users don't have a clue how to upgrade there machines, or if you have a celeron which is a socket 478 and you need a Intel 3ghz w/ HT or Amd 64 that gonna be a good 300 for the mobo and cpu atleast. E17 is a desktop manager for linux which has a whole bunch of special effects it still in the testing stage but it runs wonderful on my computer and I only have a Celeron 2.7ghz, though I know it runs just as well on lower end machines. Though for some reason I think that is the recommended requirements for all the special affects. Though I still probably won't be it for the other computer in my house hold cause it doesn't have winfx or that new command line thing of m$. Bill Gates has ****ed up majorly. Hopefully in a year or two linux will be further a long for the average joe.

P.S. I'd be happy to upgrade and pay for the OS if M$ would pay for computer upgrades that I need but that will never happen.

I don't understand why people are so angry about this. :/

There are PLENTY of alternatives to use, you can stick with XP, 2000, or even Linux which technology wise is probably way ahead of what Vista has at the moment, even more so when Vista retails.

Personally I probably won't use Vista, it doesn't have any features that I will actively gain from. :)

When will people get it, if your PC runs XP it most likely will run Vista as well, it will be in "tiers" so those with older computers run in "classic" mode, then there is supposedly Aero and Aero glass!

I guess the interface is what probably makes people want to upgrade anyway at the moment anyway, I don't see much else that makes me interested!

I'm a major linux fan boy, but my parents / sisters don't wanna take the time to learn linux which isn't even 10% of the computer market share I think it more like 2%. Secondly 2000 is no longer support by microsoft, and the same thing will happen with xp in a year or two after vista, that is why I'm ****ed. I need to run an old outdated piece of crap and make sure it works for my family member its a pain in the ass.

Yeah well in all honesty, you can set up Linux to be just as usable as Windows is. Infact you can make it look identical!

I think if you don't like something then don't use it and it is as simple as that, truth is many exploits wouldn't even be exploited if networks were properly secured.

I have ran my laptop on Windows 98 for the last 5 or 6 years, and connected to the network and internet, I have had no viruses, no intrusions, and no problems whatso ever.

If people are going to bitch about an OS then I see no reason why you can't evolve and learn something slightly different that will suit your needs.

Vista is not the be all and end all and it never will be!

Very true but one small problem first my sisters and parents aren't exactly to smart they can't determine what is real and what is fake. My dad saw a popup window that looked like a dialog box and he didn't know what to do. One problem with linux is that windows apps don't run. Yes there is wine but you can't emulate office 2003, which is one of the biggest problems, plus there is no aim, or msn , or any other things my sisters like. They have to use whatever is cool. Like they want a ipod, but don't want a Zen, Zen Touch, Micro Zen, just because of looks, could save 'em around $100 if they go with the Zen but they want a ipod because of the looks. It fashion statment thing that geeks like us don't care about much.

Yeah I definately see where you are coming from, but Vista just feels a tremendous leap in terms of requirements, I can feel the bloat already.

Maybe prices will be cheaper when Vista comes out, hopefully or it will be one hell of an upgrade. :p

Mine can:

Athlon-64 3500+ Venice

1 GB PC3200 RAM

160 GB SATA hard drive

NVIDIA Geforce 6600

I know of no other machien that can run Vista. I find it odd that Microsoft requires a machine at at least 3 GHz when most machines on the market are slower so users won't upgrade.

Mine runs Vista just fine, but I'm probably going to get a newer graphics card before I get Vista... The one I have now is a 64MB ATI AIW 9000 Pro, and it doesn't support the glass effect. I temporarily swapped it out for my other nVidia GeForce FX 5200 128MB to mess around in Vista with the glass effects, but I like the TV tuning features of my ATI, so I'm probably going to get a newer AIW card for Vista.

640MB DDR PC 3200

ATi Radeon 9550 256MB AGP 8x

:) I've tried Vista out before... runs nice and smooth at 1280x1024 with DWM running and everything..

Microsoft said years ago that the requirements for CPU were simply "a modern CPU" and that has not changed! Microsoft has not given any more information than that concerning the processor requirements and the final release. The "3.0ghz" "requirement" is fake! Above all, with the many Neowin beta-testers in this thread as proof, is wrong!

My laptop (2ghz AMD Athlon XP 3000+, 512mb RAM, ATI Radeon 9700) ran vista B1 just fine.

Hell, my desktop (1.6ghz Athlon XP 2000+, 256mb RAM, nVidia GeForce FX5200) ran it fine.
