Feature suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am not beta-tester of Windows Vista, but I have some suggestions that could be cool. Because I'm not a beta-tester, I can't provide feedback to Microsoft, but I hope that if any official beta-tester reads that and likes one or more of my ideas, he will submit it to Microsoft.

1. Boot in more than 16 colors.

2. "Minimal mode/user account"

That would be a way to improve performance with applications that need many resources, like games or media editing/encoding programs. In this mode, Windows wouldn't load any unwanted program, a little like safe mode, but drivers and all Windows APIs would be loaded. There would be a start page for only UI. This "start page" would only contain: Change mode/return to classic windows mode button, Shut Down button, a list of frequently used programs in this mode, A file selecting feature, and that's all. When you open a file, every files needed by the application would open, and the other, like the start page, would be dropped away.

3. Better adaptation of system to user

it could mean a selection of music that begins to play at the account opening and that could be made from the system's analyze of most frequently played sound files or from a customization wizard, that could also disable the feature.

Or, it could even mean a "chance" function in Internet Explorer. The system makes a list of most frequently visited sites, and when you click on the "chance" button, it goes to one of these sites. It could also be disabled or customized with a wizard.

4. Video Desktop

See videos on the desktop

5.Internet Desktop

A similar function exists right now in Windows but the difference is that the page could be on the web.

When you open your account, the wallpaper automatically changes for a page that you choose at the first boot in your account. A this same boot, you can enable or disable it and it can be managed later in Control Panel.

6. Better Customization tools

May include something like Logon Studio, by Stardock. Unfortunately, they stopped development of Logon Studio. It would me cool if Microsoft included a Logon design and Boot Screen Design application. Because frankly, those that exist now aren't so good...

7. "Choose account directory" option

On first boot, we should be able to choose in what folder and in what partition each user's "Documents and settings"

Sorry if some of them already exist, and sorry for my bad english.

Goodbye...

Definitely.

2. "Minimal mode/user account"

Windowed applications typically do not require hogging the system's resources. The only applications that really demand hogging are fullscreen games. In Windows Vista, the system automatically unloads unnecessary services, applications, etc. when a fullscreen application is launched - so, in a sense, this suggestion has already been implemented but in a more user-friendly way.

As for the rest of the suggestions, I don't like them or they are pointless. I don't like the idea of web pages or videos directly on the desktop. Having things work by "chance" is pointless. The thought of the system learning how I use the computer (what kind of music I like and various other things) is downright scary (what if an exploit were found and it sent all of this personal information to some malicious person or group of people.) Choosing an account directory is pointless. Customization tools are pointless because other developers will likely make them and the majority of users don't need to bloat their computer with completely useless software.

Here's what I want:

1) MSN Messenger integration

Features such as a contact list on the Sidebar, presentations across Messenger etc...

2) Xbox360 integration

Controller support has been confirmed, but other stuff would be nice, like Friends list on the Sidebar, access 360 files across your home network i.e game saves or images sent via Live, sending 360 files i.e your Movie Maker vids etc...

Cross-platform gaming would be nice, and it has already been confirmed.

3) Non-IE browser support/Support for third-party apps

The Set program Access and Defaults was a good idea, but it didn't work well. How about a drop-down list, where you select your default programs i.e Internet, IM, Media Player etc...

4) More system resource-efficient

Maybe it could use the hardware in a more efficient way?

5) BluRay support

Okay, so it will probably only support HD-DVD, but if BR becomes standard, then what? HD-DVD will become a Windows-only brand. Keep it open, please.

That chance thing sounds good! Would love to see that! Sounds a lot like My tabs from MSN Toolbar, where you click, and your fave pages come up, instantly.

how bout a switchable 'lite' theme instead of those flashy effects that they have on xp and vista.  I rather have more performance than special effects

im sure all the effects could be turned off it needed. i mean they will have to be turned off for pcs that are too slow to support it in the first place.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Create custom menus in start menus.

2. Logon screen clock. This was in a 3XXX build but now its gone.

3. A simpler version of glass for earlier video cards. For example, use alpha-blended PNGs or something.

4. uxtheme.dll already supporting non-MS msstyles. As of now, you have to replace the uxtheme.dll with a patched version.

5. Include themes from XP and earlier builds such as Energy Blue, the XP styles, Plex, Slate, Jade, the 5048 aero, etc. Complete with different toolbar icons, shellstyles, etc.

I know that some of these are probably overwhelming for microsoft to do but they are what i would like to have in Vista.

4) More system resource-efficient

Maybe it could use the hardware in a more efficient way?

It already does. DirectX 10 controls the drawing of items on the screen. In contrast, Windows XP and before used the CPU to draw things to the screen. This not only improves speed but also reduces the work the CPU does and allows the screen to be double-buffered so there's no redrawing issues, ghosting issues, etc. Another way hardware is being used more efficiently is that networking overhead has been moved from the processor to the network card, further reducing the amount of CPU resources unnecessarily used.

5) BluRay support

Okay, so it will probably only support HD-DVD, but if BR becomes standard, then what? HD-DVD will become a Windows-only brand. Keep it open, please.

I do not know where you got the idea that BluRay will not be supported. Even if Microsoft does not create their own drivers, the hardware vendor will supply them. BluRay should work if the hardware is installed correctly.

1. Create custom menus in start menus.

Right-click on "All Programs" -> Explore. Change the start menu however you want, it's just a folder/shortcut organization that creates the start menu. I have all of my software organized in categories like Internet, Multimedia, Office, etc.

3. A simpler version of glass for earlier video cards. For example, use alpha-blended PNGs or something.

Aero is supposed to scale its effects back for hardware that is not powerful enough.

4. uxtheme.dll already supporting non-MS msstyles. As of now, you have to replace the uxtheme.dll with a patched version.

Already done.

Definatley a scaled back Aero for hardware that isnt powerful enough, I mean, the blur and stuff is pixel shader 2.0, but per pixel opacity is in a much earlier directx, and shoudlnt be too hard to implement.

I cant wait for the sidebar to be back either.

More inbuilt themes would be good too, like dark and light, at the moment, I'm forced to have a black startbar with light window borders and you cant change that, which is annoying, something like a theme which you can change the colours for dynamically would be good.
