Apple-a-Day
This is a interesting situation, Cuba has offered assistance to the US. HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuban President Fidel Castro put on display some 1,500 doctors equipped with medical supplies on Sunday in hopes of persuading arch-enemy the United States to allow them to treat victims of Hurricane Katrina. Castro, in a televised meeting with the doctors, said the United States had not responded to his offer to send medical workers and 26 tons of supplies to the devastated U.S. Gulf Coast. He first made the offer public during a Television presentation on Friday, saying political enmity should be put aside during such a crisis. The doctors, each with a green rucksack filled with emergency medicines, were brought to Havana over the weekend, Castro said, and were ready to leave at a moment's notice. The Cuban leader read out news stories describing a lack of medical attention for Katrina refugees and those still trapped in Louisiana and Mississippi a week after the storm hit. "These doctors could all already be there providing their services," Castro said. "Forty-eight hours have passed and we still haven't received any response to our offer ... We will wait patiently as many days as are necessary," he said. audioscheine
The americans arnt allies with cuba. I have nothing against comunism or cuba, but this sounds like Castro is trying to win some support for cuba.... See he offers aid, and if american doesnt take the aid, just because its cuba, castro wins.. and is able to boast and say... the americans are so petty and wont let us help. Little stand offs like that used to happen all the time in the cold war.
Bamsebjørn
I think it sounds more like Cuba is trying to offer some help in times of need, just like they do when other countries need help. What's the problem here? That Cuba is a communist country? People are dying, America should accept all the help they can get because, obviously, they can't handle the situation all by themselves. The Bush government is just too arogant and proud to accept help from the reds. If any other country needs 'help', America won't even ask, they will just go there to 'help'.

Pete Zaria
Let's face it. Fidel Castro F#$@&d up bigtime 20 or 30 years ago (Cuban Missile Crisis, Cold War, etc...). Now, IMO, Castro is trying to say he's sorry. By offering doctors with medical supplies and 26 tons of food and water, I think Castro is trying to burry the hatchet a bit before he kicks the bucket. And I'm sorry the Bush administration won't accept his help; It's a generous offer, and I think we should burry the hatchet with Cuba anyway. Oh, and God knows we need that food, water, and medical help in New Orleans right now. If you've read any of my political posts before, you already know I lean left. I think the Bush administration did a HORRIBLE job of handling this. You know, maybe we should fix OUR OWN PROBLEMS before we blow 8 trillion dollars and 1800-something American lives and 27718 innocent Iraqi lives [www.iraqbodycount.org] to find WMDs that didnt exist and kick Sadam off his throne, which put us in the position of fixing all of Iraq's problems! Heck, if we had spent that 8 trillion bucks here in the US, we could have a much better education system, more mass transit, oh and maybe enough funding to clean up after a hurricane. Ya think? The Bush administration blew all their resources fighting an unjust war, and then fell asleep at the wheel during Katrine. If they impeached Clinton for a ######, let's throw Bush out on his bum for this one. Peace, Pete Zaria. theyarecomingforyou
It's an interesting move as it obviously damages the image of the US by implying that they can't handle the situation themselves (as well as being a friendly gesture)... but Bush should have been quicker with his response.
