What should the Vista Start Menu look like?

Recommended Posts

Personally I don't like the look and feel of the start menu i8n the current version of windows vista.

What do you guys think the start menu should look like in the final version of windows vista?

Perhaps you could show some mockups or Sketches?

I don't like the current Start Menu either! It is very annoying when I have an application that has a longer name then what the current menu shows. Hopefully this will be fixed in future builds of Vista. I honestly can't think of a way to make it look better then to keep it as what Windows XP currently has.

I too would like to see someone's mockup of what a Start Menu could look like

Thats strange, because when I hover the mouse pointer over a file with a really long name it overlaps and shows the entire filename. See attached.

I just booted in to Vista to see if maybe I was missing something and it doesn't do that for me :(

But, I can always file a bug report

To be honest I think that the new concept for the start menu is great.

As long as the developers manage to incorporate it well it could be space saving and easier to use - that said I haven't personally used Vista yet unfortunatlly but from what I have seen from it it is pretty much there.

However I think they should have various options for the Vista start menu. On Windows XP they have 'Start Menu' and 'Classic Start Menu'.

In Vista they could have 'Start Menu', 'XP Start Menu' and 'Classic Start Menu'?

See, I don't personally mind the new start menu, because my start menus are really well sorted and pretty minimal. But I know PC users who's shortcuts fill the screen 2, 3 or even 4 times over (scroll programs off) so imagine cramming all that crap into a small window in the start menu? It'll get quite messy.

Very true... perhaps Microsoft should make something like 'Start Blocks' - just made that up BTW. On Control panel they can define what they call their Start Blocks - such as "Office" or "Gaming" and then users can only modify things within "gaming" or any other directory... thats a pretty decent way to keep the start menu clutter free but still easy for people to use how they want imo.

I haven't used Vista so I don't know if they added this, but having "My Videos" in the "My" section (I know...they removed "My" from the names)..It's annoying being able to access all the folders I don't want (Favorites, Network Places, ...) and not able to have quick access to My Videos...

I do however like the pic that Quarzimodo has...it's kinda funky...if it had My Videos...i would like it...well, and having the proper icons...not winME/2K icons...

Something like this would be nice.

Not that big but in the kind of it.

That's called a bug. Submit it on Connect if you are an official tester.

You should refer that to Hurmoth not me, I am seeing the correct result, he is not.

That pic was a concept for the pre-beta Whistler OS around 2000. They ditched it pretty soon for the current XP start menu. I don't think it would have been very useful, covering the whole screen and all.
