I don't think it's possible in Windows, but in Linux you just use PengAOL, an excellent piece of software written by a french author which works on AOL anywhere in the world, and seems to connect much better than the windows software. My mate just has a script so all he does is log on and type 'aol' to connect. There are pleantly of faqs showing you how to set up the software as well as info on the link above.

It was created by reverse engineering the connection.

Anyone want to port it.... ;)

If you're using XP, I think that you can connect thru the network connection page.

Unfortunatly setting any of the dial up networking settings to use the AOL numbers in XP won't work as the protocol used by AOL for dialup is propriatary (ie copyright) and that's why you have to use their software.

As far as I know there hasn't been any software developed (yet?) which can dial up using their protocol, but a method has been found by the author of the linux dialer so it's probably only a matter of time.

Why does it create a dialup connection then?

Why does it create a dialup connection then?

This is so programs like internet explorer or anything else requesting a network connection will launch the AOL software when they try and connect, it doesn't actually use the dial up networking protocols built into windows but allows AOL to be integrated like any other connection.

hold up, why the hell do you use AOL then? Just uninstall AOL and use AOL instant messenger to talk to your AOL buddies. Cancel that AOL account NOW!! AOL sux big time. Just simply set up a PPPoE connection using the connection wizzard in Internet Connection in the control panel and you don't have to use crappy AOL.

I use AOL as I can't get broadband and they're the only ISP in the UK which allow unlimited connection 24/7 and have no cut-off at a reasonable price. Most other ISPs only allow connection for about 12 hours a day and I like to get some big files (the only thing I use my home connection for), and can stay on for days at a time without any complaints from AOL. Other ISPs charge up to ?100 for a 24/7 connection, and with their cheaper unmetered packages they kick you off for over use. Download speeds are also 5k/s-7k/s where I am so I'm quite happy.

I also use my free ISDN connection to BT with windows XP(from work, which I can't use for downloading just browsing as I'm not allowed:(( ) and don't even have their software installed even now so I don't mind them at all. Just have linux connected while I'm out.

Normaly on any other ISP it just gives you a phone number and you put you user name and password in your self, I think?

SO how can I find out this Number so I can use the conection wizard to sort it?

The number is listed easily in the dialup, but don't waste your time. AOL uses a proprietary method of authentication to sign you on, hence DUN will not work, only AOL's bloatware.

yeah, you have to use AOLs software. It wont connect unless you are using the software. There might be cracks for that but i've never heard or seen any.... If you gotta then just simply connect with AOL then minimize it then just simple use IE if you wish like normal....

Nope... you can use dial up networking and use any browser you want.

For the username all you would put: MSN/Main Account Name

I don't know if this has been said yet or not, nor do I know if it still works. But a few years ago there was a piece of software created by AOL called "AOL Net Connect". It is what I used to use when I was forced to use AOL as my primary ISP. But like I said, I'm not POSITIVE it still works, You can give it a shot. Here's the link to download it. Please respond back and let me know if it works for you!

The funny hing about this is that I don't want to have AOL's browser open because I want to use Netscape of all things :D and I wonder who owns that :p they are stoping me from downloading there own browser.

and another thing AOL are doing a realy **** job with Netscape
