Not to worry, Version 8.0 of AOl will have Netscape for a browser. If you still needed a reason to leave and get a real ISP that should do it! ;)

actually, it is not netscape. it is gecko which is the rendering technology that netscape and mozilla use.

look at it as a stripped down version of mozilla (ie no toolbar and stuff)

That's nowhere near the final decision yet. In fact, AOL hasn't even started beta testing version 8.0 with an internal Gecko browser.

I have a feeling that when it becomes final, AOL will provide users with a choice of whether they want to use Netscape Gecko or Internet Explorer as the internal browser.

I got all Mozillas ad blocking fetures back from Here so its better than Mozilla. I think AOL will change there ways because if there arch rival MSN allow you you to use 3rd party browsers Like Netscape or Opera then AOL will do the same thing espesialy if more people do what ive just done and Phone up and complain :p

AOL? Give users a choice? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHA :p! That's funny. AOL is gonna be dropping IE like an old piece of fruit soon as they can... they have no reason to use IE since their desktop placement is gone in XP, thus no more IE contract.

You can use any browser you want to open with AOL, just open it up and enjoy the slowness.

As for phoning and complaning... yeah... right... because MAYBE AOL listens to their customers :right:

Yeah, it's not as bad as you think. My cousin has AOL Plus DSL, and a month ago, his DSL modem got fried. He called AOL, waited on hold for about 2 minutes, and then a tech support "specialist" came on the line, and within 5 minutes confirmed that his modem wasn't behaving properly. So, she said they would mail out a new DSL modem to replace it. All he had to do was mail the old one back to them, and he wouldn't be charged for the new one. He did just that. It took 3 days for the new modem to arrive after he made the call, and he sent the old, busted one back to them. All was fine and dandy. They didn't charge him anything for it, and he got a new, working DSL modem less than a week after he made the call about it.

I never said that I know this. That's why I included the words have a feeling in my original post. Those words mean I'm making a guess based on what I know about it. :right:

AOL uses some random key to create your real username. Your real username can be found by following the instructions in the thread AOL For Linux (this works with AOL 6.02, not tried it with the rest. You can connect to AOL (well - in the UK - again ive not tested) but u get booted after a few seconds....

This kinda has no point but at least its sumfin

Too lazy to read the whole thread, so sorry if this has already been mentioned...

I HAVE seen a program that emulated different ISP protocols, which allowed you to connect without using their programs. This was back in the days of Compuserve, AOL, and Prodigy, so i am not sure if they continued to develop it or not, but i bet there is something out there!
