Time has past and there?s a lot of finger pointing going on who's to blame for many things in the aftermath of the biggest disaster in the USA. For now put that aside and look at the rescue efforts first. Obviously this effort is going to cost more than they currently are getting funding for as it will take a while. During this rebuild there is opportunists who will channel money, swindle, gouge, or simply steal straight out. Welcome to this thing we call "for profit" I pose this question.....

Should the Whitehouse push forwarded a law right away that any person, corporation, CEO, or head of Govt or State who indulges in the act of profiteering etc at the time of a disaster, and be found guilty be put to death as a mandatory sentience. I watch the TV and shots the people of the Gulf Sates are suffering and I see nothing but pain and loss. I personally find it disgusting that they are already finger pointing when they should be putting all the attention to rescue and collecting the departed properly. We see so many grandstanders claiming him, or her, or them, blaming racism or what ever. But the bigger crimes are yet to follow.

So I put this question to you... should profiteers or gougers or any one stealing monies from any relief effort face the ultimate penalty? Would they be ready to steal and pay with their lives for it?

if you take a loaf of bread.. you are stealing.

if you take money that is not yours.. you are stealing.

if you take a load of bread, in a natural disaster (new orleans) to feed yourself / someone else.. you are NOT stealing.

if you take money that is not yours.. in a natural disaster.. you are stealing.

the people that took money, TV's, gold, watches, stuff like that.. should of been shot. there is NO ELECTRICITY.. why do you need a big ass tv for?

people that took food, and clothing.. i can see how that is fine.. they needed to get clean, dry cloths (if there was any) and feed themselfs...

but do you expect more from a city that has one of the biggest crime rates.. and theres no power (no alarms) no police, no guards.. nothing to stop you.. hey, if i was in new orleans.. i would be doing the samething.. if i gotta eat.. im gonna do what it takes.

Nothing should be changed. People should make money however they want; if they choose stealing then they are dealt with later (eventually) so why do we need a new law?

Thats my 2cents anyways...

We have laws to deal with this as it stands. Theft is theft.

Then the court system steps in to decide how to execute the law, taking circumstances into consideration.

If a family steals food to feed, they ARE still stealing. But there is justification. They need to know they will face a legal process because they committed a crime - but WHY they committed it will be taken into consideration.

Courts recognise both:

The letter of the law

The meaning of the law

I know it would be easy to say death, but if you were in that situation, and there was something expensive you really wanted (a phone/TV/laptop etc), could you honestly say you wouldn't think of stealing it. The owners of the shop would probably be able to claim it back on insurance anyway.

I just feel its crazy that some political/business/coperate fat cats could swindle say millions and walk aways for a short prison term because it was only fraud. Enron proved that by being corooked you could bilk billions from a company then in say 10 yrs walk out of prison and be so damn wealthy its sickening. Put the laws in place that stealing like this is going to cost you and cost you dearly.

Yet you are teh average poor Joe Smoe and you get busted witha bag if weed you do 5 years and your ****ed for life

I don't think they should make a new law there already is one that happens to be that you can't steal so stick with that one.

I think they should arrest the heads of most major oil companies, because THEY'RE the once price-gouging, looting, stealing, and profiteering off of this. Katrina is the best thing that's happened to Exxon in the past 5 years. And Bush doesn't mind.

Face it, our government had 3 days notice that Katrina was going to hit the gulf coast, and hard. But it took them 5 days to get help in there. People were stranded on their roofs and attics for 5 days or more waiting for rescue. They ran out of food and water even at the government-provided shelters. They had 3 days notice to get food and water in place, to get the National Guard and rescue people nearby. But no, they fell asleep at the wheel, and the price was paid in human lives. Yes, I blame our government very much for not having been better prepared, and for not doing what they could before it was too late. Even after the hurricane their response was slow and ineffective. If we can't handle a hurricane that we get 3 days notice on, how could we possibly handle a terrorist attack?

I can't blame people that are taking food, water, groceries, hygiene products, and other essentials. But the people stealing TVs, electronics, cars, money, etc... are unquestionably criminals. But seriously, which is worse?

Stealing a TV, or failing to get supplies and rescue operations ready....

So punish our administration and the heads of the oil companies.

They impeached Clinton for a ######. Let's impeach Bush, for an unjust war, lying to the public, and failing to respond to a horrific natural disaster.

Peace,

Pete Zaria.
