Firefox customizing search bar

Recommended Posts

i have absolutely no use for some of the search engines in the search bar ie. Amazon, Yahoo, Creative Commons etc. Is there a way to remove the ones i dont want and keep the ones that are of use to me?

go to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins

delete the ones that you dont want, or you can change the text in the .src files so that it searches different search engines or sites. Use notepad to open these files.

go to your firefox install folder. e.g. c:/program files/mozilla firefox find there "searchplugins" folder and delete the ones you don't want. but, remember, that each time you update/reinstall firefox they will be back, as they are mozilla's sponsors.

I was going to post about this. I have just updated my copy of Firefox to 1.5 beta. Now they add yet another useless search engine: Answers.com. Do every single Firefox user visit Answers.com? Yahoo.com? Creative? Amazon? Ebay?. They should let us decide which engines we want to install at setup. Or they should only include the most used essential search bars which is Google, Dictionary, Wikipedia (maybe not), etc.

This is my rant. I am tired of having to delete those useless engines, every time I install Firefox.

Are they really that much in your way?

However, I think they should add a "Remove search engine"-button somewhere, it's a pain having to delete the files manually, and most end-users don't even know how to do this.
