Installing Vista x64...

Recommended Posts

will i be able to entirely switch over to Vista x64? here's the stuff i need to run:

HARDWARE

Athlon64 Winchester Core 3000+

2x512MB DDR400

128MB 6600GT

ASUS A8N-SLI

SOFTWARE

Games - Enemy Territory, NFSU2, HL2

Other - StudioMX2004, The GIMP 2.2, OfficeXP, iTunes5, VisualStudio.NET Enterprise 2005, Norton Antivirus 2000

I'm guessing most of this will run in Legacy32bit mode, although will there be all the drivers to support it, or should i just install x86-32 edition?

Why would you want to entirely switch over? This is beta software which is meant to be tested in a test environment. Switch at you own risk, but I'm guessing half your software wont be supported as well as your hardware..

Whats the rush to switch over completely anyway?

gimp wont run, period. norton isnt needed since no virus seems to work on vista anyways. iTunes is junk, Visual Studio 2005... hold off on that because it might screw with the .net framework. StudioMX should be fine, and same with office XP

games: HL2 wont run unless you bounce back to xp drivers, which wont allow DWM to run. I havent tried out the other two.

Your hardware specs are good to go.

however, whats the point? the only reason Im using vista is because my XP got screwed, and vista is my backup OS (and because my old xp bootloader is screwy but vista doesnt need it.

There is a big problem with the x64 version. There are no Nvidia display drivers that get DWM to work. So that means the good graphical stuff won't work until Nvidia releases them, which could take a very long while.

The 64-bit version however ran beautifully fast ! It runs faster than XP, even though it's a beta.

I don't recommend you switch now, just wait until good drivers are out there !
