making the patient sicker to make it better

Question

Since the slave drive disaster (which I'm still trying to fix), I've come upon some errors in XP that come (I think) from the various fixes I've tried.

Can I use my WinXP disk to fix those problems? I've lost access to my email completely (I click the email button, the logo pops up and disappears), and IE doesn't want to stay up - it pops back to my desktop.

Should I do an "upgrade install" and hope I don't lose anything else?

Any help is appreciated!

I would reformat and clean install. Upgrade "in-place" installs are not that reliable for things like this. If there are any problems with a windows installation, do a format and clean install. It will be more tedious, but it will be worth it. :)
