Some advice?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if this is exactly the right forum for me to be posting this in, but I'm going to be buying a new computer sometime within the next 20 days. All of the parts from the same location (www.tcwo.com) and I'm trying to, well, get the best bang for my buck, as I'm going to have to borrow some money to buy the entire thing and I don't want to go too far in debt. The parts that I have lined up so far seem to complete it but I'm not really sure, I keep feel like I'm missing something; all of the parts and better descriptions can be found at tcwo.com, and yeah...I was wondering if I'm missing anything or if any of the parts are of a frowned-upon quality. I probably seem pretty stupid. Here's the list, prices included!

Antec Perfect Plus 1080b 430W Black $149

1024MB PC2700 333MHz DDR $250.00

AthlonXP 2100+ Retail Box $194.00

Coolermaster 80mm Univ Case Fan x 2 $24.00

Lite-On 16X DVD Retail $42.00

Black 1.44 FDD $16.00

Lite-On 48x12x48 CD-RW $86.00

Maxtor 80GB U100 5400 2MB x 2 $184.00

Soyo Dragon Ultra DDR S/L/R/A133 $162.00

TCW GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB $179.00

Blue Orb Chipset Cooling Fan $14.00

couple of quick things - looks like your Board is ATA 133, so why would you be getting ATA 100 drives??

And do you really need 2 80 gigs? I would guess your going to be running Raid 0, maybe 1? I think this board supports that. But again - why get 5400 rpm ATA 100 drives, when you would get better perf out of 7200rpm ATA 133 drives.

A quick look found Maxtor 80G 7200rpm ATA133 Model # 6L080J4, 2MB Buffer, 7200 RPM, 8.5ms Access - for $94 each Or go with the 60Gig Model 6L060J3, D740X, 8.7ms access, 2mb buffer and save a little coin??

Are you going to be using that much space - really??? Or do you plan on running Raid 1 - and losing half the space?

My 2 cents

I'd buy from Newegg, but the thing is, the place where I'm buying is located in my cousin's neighborhood (I live across the country in California, TCW is in Florida), so it simply makes things far more convenient for me if anything goes wrong, etc.

Hey, your two cents are why I made this thread, so it's greatly appreciated.

You do have a point; I've been running this at, like I said, the most bang for my buck, and I haven't taken much into consideration, so I thank you a lot for your advice. I don't have too much of a price limit (under $1500. :) ) so I'll go back and revise my stuff.

And, yes, I am going to be using that much space (all 160 gigs of it). I'm contemplating whether or not I should toss in my existing 40gig or if I should leave it in my existing box.

Again, thanks for your advice. :)

1 gig of RAM seems like a lot. I have 512 megs and its more than enough.

And another thing, the heatsink/fan that comes with retail AMDs sucks. Im using it now and my temps are in the upper 50's. I recommend getting an OEM processor and getting a better HSF, such as teh Thermaltake Volcano 7+

Many thanks for the advice; I'll take your word for it.

Besides, this way, I can get an XP 2200+. ;)
