Morphos
friend of mine put together a system, quite nice, and used these(Logitech Z-560's, click for link): roughly $179-199. with a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card, which runs 30 bucks or less, around there. While you want a 5.1 surround, the 4.1 provided by the logitech will be more than enough to be completely amazing, i'd trade my 5.1 Cambridge Soundworks in a heartbeat for the Logitechs...Plus the one less speaker is made up for by the larger footprints of the speakers. UKer
Be warned creative cards use quite a bit of CPU when decoding 5.1, eg an audigy uses about 20% of a decent processor when watching a DVD. Some other makes are better, for example the nVidia on on my mobo uses less than 2% of CPU when watching a DVD, but you can't buy these seperatly. Best to look around and find one which handles Direct Sound using hardware, dunno which do this personally. Speakers are quite pricy but you can get some creative inspire 5.1 5300s for about ?60 (UK) and these are good for the price, they are analogue though so make sure the sound card has the appropriate outputs (you need 3, one for front speakers, one for back and one for sub/centre), they won't work with a SPDIF out. Digital speakers usually cost aroung ?200 at least.
