Koto
I just built a new computer for someone [specs below], and it keeps crashing in [Win2K]. So far only in games, but in all the games I've tried so far... Sometimes it freezes/crashes in 2 minutes, sometimes after an hour. I don't think it's overheating, because the CPU and case fans are working fine. ECS K7S5A AthlonXP 1700+ GeForce 2 GTS 768 SDRAM Sound Blaster Live Value Latest Nvidia drivers (not beta) Latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers [EDIT - Oops, for some reason I put 256 DDR, but I had 768 SD until I took it out and put in 256 DDR, which for some reason fixed the problem]
flakingbiscuit
have you tried reinstalling the graphics card drivers? are the graphics card drivers WHQL certified(not 3rd party nvidia drivers)?
paulladle
Why have you installed the VIA 4in1's as the K7S5A is a SIS chipset MOBO, if so this is probably part of the problem?
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted July 11, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2002 The problem is that you installed Via 4-in-1's for a SIS based motherboard. You totally hosed the whole AGP and IDE drivers. These are the Drivers You need. LOL never seen that before, not every computer needs the via 4-in-1's.
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted July 11, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2002 Actually I'd reformat as the 4-in-1's have more drivers than sis does. Dangit paulladle you beat me to it!
Koto
Ohh, I'll try that, thanks... I was supposed to use the 4-in-1 drivers with my old mobo, and I guess I downloaded and installed it with my new mobo without thinking. :ermm:
paulladle
I'd use the ones that came on the disk with the MOBO (assuming you've got it?) unless you've got a fast connection as they're quite large and the orginals are OK. Upgrade the AGP driver to the 1.09 version and you'll see some 3D speed improvements but I'd stay away from the the latest 1.10 one (on the SIS website) as this one totally shafted an XP installation I had on one machine. Wickedkitten Veteran Posted July 11, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2002 also check to make sure that you have the proper amount of thermal paste on the chipset
[xan]
Test it with another memory module (one that works for sure). memory is # 1 for crashing (I have an 1700+ and I had to change the memory...)
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted July 11, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2002 I just can't beleive that it even ran with the 4-in-1's no bsod on startup, that's prettcy commendable.
Dessimat0r
You can't install the 4-in-1s on a non-VIA board... the instaler just quits
mAcOdIn Veteran Posted July 11, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 11, 2002 If it's not the drivers it's probably either ACPI or an underpowered PSU. Although sometimes moving the ram to the other slot helps.
Koto
Just formatted and stuff... Strangely enough, it wasn't the drivers, it was the memory [768 / SDRAM]. Had to take out the 768 and use 256 [DDR] from my other computer. =
XtremeX
I have the same board as you can see from my specs, I also had that same prob sort of make sure you are using 1 kind of ram either SDRAM or DDR also make sure they are the same kind of ram from the manufacture for example I had some cheap housebrand ram i bought 2 diff kinds and my system crashed and froze and crap after a few min. I bought new crucial ram and it ran fine. Also make sure in the BIOS you have the 133/133 or either 100/100 enabled you should try 100/100 first. Koto
I wasn't using both kinds... I was using a 512 [sD] and a 256 [sD], I took both out and put in one 256 [DDR] and it ran fine.
