Vice
This is what happened to it - the interface became child like and it didn't advance quick enough for the competition.

Chicane-UK Veteran Posted September 12, 2005 Veteran Share Posted September 12, 2005 At the end of the day, Internet Explorer just became the better browser - Microsoft threw countless fortunes into their browser effort just to beat Netscape and then when they got to the top, they just switched off. Now there is good competition again!

groingo2
Have been using Net 8 since the preview stage and it does have some good ideas while the current release does have its share of problems mainly in performance and apparent stability, what works good on one machine does not on another...but when it does work it is fast, stable and easy to use which brings us to it's learning curve which for most may be a bit too steep which results in problems but for those willing to stick it out and taking the time to get to know the browser it is a very nice addition to the current browser collection and well worth the time spent...however, the latest release of FF 1.5 beta 1 has closed all but the dual browser engine gap. El_Cu_Guy
Does anyone uses Netscape ( 8.0 ) ? Yeah I bet someone does. I'm fairly certain that 10 years from now we'll still be wading through "Does any use Netscape?" threads. That is, if we don't drown in Neoplanet threads first.

soviet_star
Netscape is still a valid and excellent choice. If u dont want N8, why not go with the complete package (7.2)?? Newer is not always better.... and to me it seems that The Mozilla Foundation and its affiliates is turning more and more into something that we have all seen before.... JK1150
As far as I remember, netscape has always been carbon copies of the browsers it was "based" off of with a few extra, but useless things and some netscape branding. Back in the day, it was "based" off of Mozilla, now it is "based" off Firefox. In both instances, you could get a better browsing experience with the original browsers anyway rather than having the same thing but branded. It's so stupid, without Netscape's Mozilla project where would Firefox be today? 586526517[/snapback] Actually, Netscape hasn't had anything to do with Mozilla since AOL bought Netscape. I loved Navigator from yesteryear, but frankly, even though its based on FF, the new version sucks. Too many things that most people dont want and customizing it is almost non-exsistent. Zeitgeist
Once IE4 came out, Netscape was pretty much screwed. They had communicator but it was falling behind, so they open-sourced it and named it Mozilla. Of course, it took years for them to create a usable product, and by then they had already lost all their market share. It was hard for them to compete against something free but IE4 was better than the product Netscape was churning out. I began my internet adventures on Netscape way back when... El_Cu_Guy
Actually, Netscape hasn't had anything to do with Mozilla since AOL bought Netscape. Not true. A number of Netscape code-monkeys were actively involved with Mozilla. AOL was as with with monetary donations (monies and hardware). Too many things that most people dont want and customizing it is almost non-exsistent. There wasn't a whole lot of customization in the stand-alone Navigator or the Communicator suite either. Once IE4 came out, Netscape was pretty much screwed. They had communicator but it was falling behind, so they open-sourced it and named it Mozilla.Of course, it took years for them to create a usable product, and by then they had already lost all their market share. Not really. The code was open-sourced in 98. Originally it utilized existing code which was later scrapped (this is the reason for the public version skip from Communicator 4.7x to Netscape 6). Mozilla itself was very usable. The Netscape realeases on the other hand were garbage. The only thing that really hindered Mozilla was the small amount of legacy code it still utilized (ie for Netscape plugins and the UI). It was hard for them to compete against something free but IE4 was better than the product Netscape was churning out. Huh? Free competing with free? All 3 were free to download. Yeah, yeah there was some effort by Netscape to charge for Communicator. However, a little digging around revealed the free download. Paid versions differed only in the fact that it offered included tech support. Read my current signature (9/14) as it pertains to Netscape. soldier1st
once AOL took over development of Netscape, thats when netscape became crap,we gotta pay our respects to netscape or all we would have now is Internet Explorer, netscape was the birth for all these other browsers but ie destroyed that birth once it won the war but now we have another war, this time it ain't just ie and netscape.it's a whole whack fulla browsers and ie is this time loosing ground to the rest of em most notably firefox. I know that they dumped the code. But Mozilla wasn't very usable at all until maybe .9 or 1. Before then it crashed every second, at least on Linux, and was just plain ugly and a lot of things plain didn't work. Huh? Free competing with free? All 3 were free to download. Yeah, yeah there was some effort by Netscape to charge for Communicator. However, a little digging around revealed the free download. Paid versions differed only in the fact that it offered included tech support. Hrm, was it always free? I could of sworn communicator was a paid product, at least until it was in it's old age. But IE4 was better than Communicator was when it came out, I don't think anyone can argue that.
