El_Cu_Guy
I guess that Firefox is Netscape's heir. Not really. The Mozilla Community scrapped a lot of the old Netscape code and re-wrote quite a bit from scratch (ie Gecko). While Mozilla (SeaMonkey) did have alot of old legacy code still, Phoenix was written as a new browser project, utilizing XUL, as well as the Gecko rendering engine. It was for all intensive purposes a side project much in the way that Camino (formerly Chmera) was. It was the Mozilla development heads which decided Phoenix (later Firebird then Firefox) was the future. Communicator 5, Netscape 6 (app suite) and all consecutive suite and stand alone browser releases have been based on newly developed community code rather than the other way around. AmericanConservative
I have always hated Netscape since day one...Just always prefered IE, of course until Safari for Mac and Firefox for PC came out. Regardless of whether or not Firefox would be here if it weren't for Netscape, I hate Netscape.

Well, Netscape funded the Mozilla project and they had a large number of coders working on the project. Without them Gecko wouldn't be where it is today. I'd say up until AOL killed the Netscape browser team, they comprised the largest amount of coders on the project.

Netscape staff were more like part-timers. Also to say that Gecko wouldn't have been developed without them is just plain silly. Gecko (aka Raptor) was a new rendering engine. To say that Netscape was fundamental in its development is just plain wrong.
