some interest thing towards build 5219

No. It is not Beta 2. No. It is not Beta 1. Yes. It is newer than Beta 1. It is a pre-beta-2 build.

Screenshots leaked onto the internet earlier today have led people to erroneously claim that the 5219 build compiled on 050824 (24 August, 2005) is the build that will be released at PDC.

This is untrue. Contrary to popular belief, every new build generated is not necessarily automatically incremented by 1. If this were true, the correct 5219 build (more on that below) would have been one compiled before 050824. Thus the 5219 050824 build would not exist. We have confirmed that the 0824 build is a legitimate build which was issued to OEM partners for testing. Did you leak these screenshots IBM as you did the screenshots of the 5203 build?

Build 5219 compiled on 050830 (30 August 2005) is the one that will be released at PDC.

How is that possible? Simple. Microsoft compiled mutiple builds of 5219 over the period of at least a week before finally declaring 050830 as the final build for 5219.

Among the changes from 0824 to 0830 is the fact that the sidebar visible in 0824 has been removed in the 0830 build.

Revamped Setup - key now determines the installation type

Microsoft have since Beta 1 changed the method and indeed the entire structure used to setup Windows Vista.

For the first time, your key will determine the type of installation you will receive. This obviously has huge benefits for the company producing the software, a single box and manual for the entire range of products can be produced which will cut manufacturing costs as well as having the ancillary benefit of encouraging possible upgrades from people who when reading the manual decide they want features they currently do not have.

Testing confirmed this new setup methodology. Microsoft confirmed that new keys are needed for this build to be installed and that these new keys will be issued at the time of download to conference attendees and to the Microsoft beta and MSDN subscribers.

As of this time we are still unaware of what type of installation key will be made available to PDC attendees. Rumors have been floated about both the Ultimate and the Pro versions. We note that Vista Ultimate is the only one receiving internal [Microsoft] testing at this time.

We could not get confirmation at the time of writing as to when exactly Microsoft is planning to make this build available to beta and MSDN subscribers.

We will keep you updated throughout the PDC as to when and where Microsoft makes Vista Build 5219 available for download.

We will be posting a comprehensive review on the PDC build of Windows Vista tomorrow.
