Things to do with an old Pentium

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I will shortly come into a fair amount of older Pentium I computers, between 90 and 166Mhz. All these boxes have ram, Video and Network.

What I'm looking for, is things I can do with these old machines, other than trash them.

I know I can turn them into a firewall/router for home networks using FloppyFW @ http://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/. This in itself is a good idea, and would greatly extend the use of the systems.

Anyone else have any good ideas??

Cheers :)

Thanks for the suggestions ppl :)

I will probably turn them into firewalls, and resell them cheap (not to sound toooooo Capitalistic, but I've got a business to run :) )

I may be able to find some peeps who are looking for a SQL server....Students hehe.

Anyone know of any other network stuff I can do w/o or with just a tiny hard drive?

Ever hear of the Beowulf Project? Yes, I know it sounds like a Tom Clancy novel, but it's not. It's distributed computing, really. Basically, you install beowulf on a bunch of computers, and network them all together. Then, your network of computers acts as one large computer. I haven't personally played with it much, but I've heard and seen some pretty neat stuff done with it. (E.g. a bunch of p-100's beowulf'd together, and running bryce - a 3D rendering prog.) So your mileage may vary.
