ok...what exactly is wrong with windows media player 10? it hasn't even been out that long. is the only improvement the ui? when will ms learn that nobody gives a rat's ass how many versions of an app it spits out just for publicity? i mean seriously, is any of this necessary - office 12, wmp 11, vista - for the end user's productivity?

It looks alright, though the oversized player controls at the bottom look extremely flashy.

Matt, I fail to see the resemblance to iTunes. It doesn't look remotely like it.

if you cant see the similarities then its not worth going into detail. the older version of itunes had a similar display, navigation and buttons comparable to wmp11 in the SS.

KOL

if it is transparent as you say then i suppose that it wouldnt look bad. i do think the layout in the screen shot is the direction ms should be moving wmp towards.

I hate it.

I'm actually really impressed. Seems like MS is finally really serious about going for a unified UI, which is very nice to see. Can't wait to play with it.

From a UI standpoint, I don't know why the controls woud be at the bottom. Your cursor spends most of its time at the top right of a window. Why not keep the buttons in that direction to reduce travel time? If they moved those controls to the top it might be better. But it's still a little too "Vegas" for me, if you know what I mean.

Fake

Fake? Unless Tjeerd Hoek played some mind trick on us, everyone in the session hall saw those images.

You could assume it's a prototype if you want to, but questioning the authenticity of a picture that's taken straight from a PDC slide deck is just silly.

Yes, it is neccessary and there are improvements to all products to warrant a new version. It's much better to have a common UI design across all apps than to have the plethora of completely different designs that they currently have. A common UI allows the user to more quickly adapt and find their way around an application.
