P!P
I've been using 5219 for about half an hour now. I'm posting this from IE 7.0.5219. First off, is the sidebar turned off by default? It's not showing up for me. Overall, for a build between Beta 1 and 2, I think this is a good build. I like they including Media Center, and all the Tablet PC features. Hence the name "Ultimate Edition". The new games are pretty cool. It will add a little value to the game when you first install it as you already have something fun to do. The speed is pretty good. It detected my APC UPS and Maxtor OneTouch without any problems. Several things had been added to the Control Panel. Fun to play around with. Seems funny to see the phrase "Peer to Peer" in the control panel. What do you think of 5219? spclffred
Well for one Ive ran it for about 8 hours today, The release was suppose to have Better (LDDM) drivers and it didnt, i had to use the old ones for NVIDIA, and yes u all might say that it my be my computer just look at my specs below, and also it crashed on me 4 times without a bsd. So i think its a bad build in not gonna use ill wait till Beta2 comes. I mean if i missing whats causeing my LDDM problem then let me know. Other wise im not useing it. Lexcyn
So far I have been using it for under an hour, but it's actually working on my system! I couldn't get the previous build to work at all, but this one works and also has the spiffy Aero effects and all ... and man does it look sweet. I can't wait until they optimize it even more. I take what I said back about the interface being ugly ... it just takes some getting used to. ;) I guess you have to see it first hand to appreciate it. I typed that fast because I wanted to get back over to my main computer. Still doesn't account for me being a dumbass.
Crimson Behelit
So what's the deal with user accounts in Vista? Does MS prompt the user to create restricted-accounts (similar to *nix)? Or is the user logged in as admin/root at all times again?
scakesence
@spclffred: are you using the 75.03 vista ones to activate LDDM? I tried installing those, and it gives me an error. I have a GeForce 6600GT, they worked on beta 1 but installation fails on this PDC refresh.
:: Lyon ::
I'm using 75.03 in this beta and it works fine..

Or is the user logged in as admin/root at all times again? 586532386 The default user account is already running with restricted access one now I think, as opposed to 5112 where you had to turn it on. (implication being you're asked for admin access each time you do something requiring admin access) edit: You have two options when making new accounts: admin user or restricted user. I *think* the restricted user is the uber-restricted one like in XP and elsewhere, while the admin user has this new restricted access mode more like running by default. So there's no "root" *user* in Windows Vista where you're never asked for anything. For that behavior to happen, you need to use an admin user, and then manually disable the restrictive mode. I think that's good if it's how it works, and heaps better than in any other Windows OS.

Malisk
Yes, it's nice, although I still haven't managed to actually trigger a password request.. :s I easily did in 5112 once I turned it on, so either they're allowing more actions now, or simply have it disabled (although it says it's enabled by default). Anyway, here are two screenshots showing what happens if you manage the User Access Protection and create accounts: (sorry for running in VMware and being Aero-challenged )
SkaterAustin
my impressions - install: The install was great, took only 40 min top to get it installed maybe less since i was in and out of my room Startup speed / load times: The load times on my system are fantastic! there seamless i get past the longhorn screen in less than 10 s and to my desktop in 4 seconds its beautiful (though i dont think its faster than the os x x86 thats a 10s os) Main os (desktop): Off the bat i noticed a lot of cosmetic changes done to the os, some of the icons, new features, etc issues i had: My x800 xl agp isn't supported (thus i had to install windows xp drivers real bad news since there not well supported for the os and that means bsod :() Im now on windows x64 (again for the 10th million time because i like it, but i think ill give beta 2 a shot once it arrives :))
Ran Sagy
It is said that they added more default drivers in these builds.. Can anyone comment on the overall hardware detection of this build ? For me, the only thing i couldn't get working in beta1 was my USB modem, hence i had no access what so ever to the net. Lasker
I'm using now vista 5219 as my main OS for this post, how I can fix the directsound? I have a Intel AC97 sound card, anyone know a link to update or something?
Malisk
I like what I'm seeing in the built-in zip support by the way. The instant search/filter seems to already be working for zips, and overall it's nice to see how well it integrates with the Vista Explorer UI. The fat icon to the right is in a pane called "Reading Pane" right now, and I think that hints that in the future it'll offer a "quick view" feature to see the actual document contents. edit: well, it didn't help I'm showing a compressed shortcut, but believe me, the same shows if it'd be an actual text doc. thecat2000
tried to install this build several times over the past day or so and no luck. Wont install - tells me theres a setup error. On installation the first time around it installs all the way to the point it needs to restart then DOESN'T restart. I have to manually reboot - it then continues setup then comes up with an error code saying that it cant upgrade - (This is from a fresh installation too) whats with the upgrade error ? At one point I was getting as far as the welcome screen to be met by an Administrator password box, a Guest account box and Login as another user box. Couldn't login to anything. I dont know whats wrong, but I had no problems installing and using the Beta 1 5112 build. This new build doesnt even install for me. Something has gone wrong some were with their installer - because just to test I reinstalled the older Beta 1 build with no problems so its a problem with the new build's installer I think. Anyway guess this build is a right-off for me :pinch:
Commodore Max
Did anyone actually get DWM working right ? I'm not seeing it in any of your screens. I also would like to know if they have a driver pack in there. Would be nice.
cropcircles
I've also been on 5219 for a couple days and was able to install a couple programs, CCleaner and Firefox. Going to mess with Desktop X3 Pro a little until that rumored tweak in the registry is found to enable the sidebar. No luck this time around either with sound on my Asus P5GD2 Deluxe moterboard running Audigy 2. Anybody know the effect to get the sideways accordion look going on files, pics. ? ... Oh yea the speed running Firefox is incredible, and programs start up faster then XP, most of the time. I'm also getting allot of Corrupt file errors when I have tried installing a couple other programs it spit out.
GusCrown
I like it so far... 99% of my hardware is working (cept for the RAID) and it recognize my vid card, an X700 Pro (LDDM and all). Great build, no installation problems, and no freezes yet. The only thing I noticed is the Recyle Bin not being updated on the spot when you trash something, I have to refresh the screen for it to change from empty to full, but that's it. Commodore Max
I was also surprised by Vista's speed compared to XP, it beats it from far, and it's still a beta !

Would be nice. 586539080 Glass works for me, on my GF 6800 Ultra Go with nvidia's alpha driver. But is is slower than Beta 1, I presume it's driver's fault, cause DiretX does not detect 256 megs of my Video ram, it reports anything in between 1 and 4 mb :( So I get choppy performance sometimes. Beta 1 worked fine for me
