Recommended Posts

Opera update is expected on Wed(it may be wrong). Also one source told me that Opera is becoming free from 20th.However people from Opera are denying that.

Nice if it was free no ads, don't bother me though as I never use it for surfing the net, just check pages, as for the ads, not really noticed them.

Opera if they were smart would not charge anything for their browser and make it adaware, not that I do, a lot just borrow reg keys or go hunting for codes, you know what I am saying.

business? i think they should have been swithced to free product long ago. first, they earn from mobile market, second, they earn from souch deals like 'what searches include in relase' or 'what pages redirect to' from other pages. like search posrtal on opera. these deals are much more profitable than mere 40$ one time income per licence sold.

and that licence fee makes them bad press, because ff is free, and any ff fanboy, and even not-fanboy can say that, and opera cant argue here. adware is pasee'

as for speculations.. i dont count on anything special. if it is going to be maintenace relase without rtf, then there is nothing realy new and interesting.

Opera is planning on a major overhaul for its desktop browser.

According to a source, Opera will release a new version of its desktop browser, which will contain major modifications to the browser's User Interface (UI). The new version will sport a simpler look.

I haven't seen any screenshots yet, so it's kind of difficult for me to give a more detailed description.

Opera is working on a new and faster rendering engine for the browser, and may include it with next week's release, though I haven't confirmed this yet.

The new version number will likely be either Opera 8.5 or Opera 9, code named "Merlin".

It is expected to be released by the end of next week.

I'll post more details as they become available to me.

Update 1 (9/16 6:32 PM): I don't want to start rumors about Opera 9, but according to multiple sources, Opera 9 is currently in development and it is no where close to being ready for release. Next week's release will be Opera 8.5.

Update 2 (9/17 11:15 PM): It seems that Opera is going to be more aggressive with its marketing of the desktop browser, though I'm not sure if this is related.

Update 3 (9/19 11:20 AM): Opera just posted to its help files the documentation for Opera 8.5.

Source: Opera Watch

:D very happy with this news, tomorrow will be a massive milestone for opera and its community, and i can't wait for it to be released.

Lets hope they manage their bandwidth more effectively this time round

I've already posted what i want in the other thread :p

But i hope they fix that bluddy PNG bug, if i leave opera running for a long amount of time (if i don't close it when i go to bed or somthing), when i start browsing again some PNG's that are supposed to be transparent look messed up.

Isn't it a bit suspicious that they're planning an update around the timeframe of the release of Firefox 1.5?

And what about 8.1 (the version with Bittorrent)? I guess that was scrapped.

Firefox 1.5 isn't scheduled to be released until the end of the year...

Actually does make a lot of money on the desktop actually. It just happens that they make more in the mobile market. They won't go free without a plan for making up that missing income, seeing as they have been expanding.

Let me indicate my utter dissapointment and underwhelmededness from this announcement. I was really hoping we'd get the rendering engine fixes.

We will, WIR. This update has no effect on the timeframe for the new fixes coming out. Speculation though is that Opera 9.0 will be out around the end of the year.
