sailgreg
On My laptop if I use a program that uses 100% of the CPU Power (750mhz) the Computer gets really hot. Is this bad for it or is it ok? It is still cooler then a normal CPU Gets, but it is quite hot :) If I stop using such programs and just browse the web, it cools down again :)

AOXOMOXOA
is it a mobile proc or a desktop proc stuck in a laptop?
Roger H. Veteran Posted July 13, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 13, 2002 oh, hehe, now i see the question. Any CPU that runs hot for too long usually shortens the life. That's why fans are now included. The CPU can run at 80C and be fine but not for long... it shortens the life of the CPU by alot. But which program uses that much CPU power (even tho mp3/movie encoding and gaming does use all the CPU) As long as the CPU isn't too hot all the time then it's fine... no need to worry. sTiMpY
For a desktop computer running AMD Athlon 1.4GHz always running @ 100% because i'm running the UD Agent cancer research program... my cpu temp is 58C when the air conditioner is not on... 43C is the system temp... is this TOO hot? sTiMpY
Sparticus
also try flashing with the newest bios for your type of system, this can help cpu heat issues a WHOLE LOT

phantomAI
sailgreg, I use a P3 600 MHz notebook. Heh, it heats up all the time. Whenever I use Netzero dial up and IE with 6 or more windows open the cpu process will go up to 100 %. Sometimes its stuck at that and the loud fan will go off and you can feel the heat. Generally my notebook heats up a lot (had for two years). I think this is normal, since laptops are suppose to heat up. Newer ones usually have two fans and a better cooling vent. I'm just stuck with one that only goes off at 100 % CPU and a small cooling vent. Maybe it is time for me to search for a desktop.:p Also Dell doesn't support my system for XP, so there are no new BIOS to flash to.

I think you had/have a Asus board and their temps were known to be off by alot so the BIOS update which you are talking about only corrected those and it now reads the correct temp which was lower.. 58C is hot to be running a CPU. It's not gonna kill it but it does shorten the life of the CPU dramatically to have it constantly that high. My AMD XP 1800+ (1.53Ghz) is running at 42C right now and that's witht he AC off (38C then). When it's fully loaded it reaches up to 48C so either keep that AC on or tell SETI to get their own machines :)
nohoy
ok well i just did this about a minute ago and i havent hit an issue yet, but then again i dont really do much with pentiums nowadays so i dont know how it will work for you or if you can (odds are you cant but why not try to help anyways) well in the bios you may be able to change the voltage so if you just drop it a little, like one deviation from the norm (again i dont know pentium, my athlon should be at 1.75 but its now at 1.65 i believe and im all full load but this is two deviations) it may help if you can do it but most likely you cannot, maybe someone will get a kick out of this
