In the advent of Microsoft and A.O.L. rumours, they may or may not merge their internet services, so MSN will be your ISP if you are an A.O.L. customer, I found it interesting to see that Google are now putting on the gloves to climb in and defeat Microsoft in a bloody battle for control.

Google make 12% of their revenue via A.O.L. advertising, so it would be in their best interests for Microsoft not to own A.O.L.

So with Google creating their own operating system, Google the biggest search engine, Google offering us wickedly great sized email and storage too, I beg the question in 5 years will Google be #1 or will it still be Microsoft?

As much as people love Google. Realistically, operating systems in my view are for Microsoft, and searching is for Google. That's how i will continue to use it. If I would side with any open source operating system it would be Ubuntu. Google Talk is a clear reason why Google will not pass beyond Microsoft in software respects. Thus, for me, Google will never be #1 in an overall view.

i imagine as microsoft as a gang that has already taken over, and i imagine google as that new upstart gang taking over everything, one day both of them will meet and then i we will be able to say who the winner is

In the current market, I say MS. But looking to the future, Google could be VERY strong. Once we all get these "always on" connections at silly speeds and fully connected homes, it will be the information providers who have the power.

Google's services could become ubiquitous!

Google sells itself as not being "evil", whereas Microsoft is popularly considered an "evil empire" of sorts and is blamed by many people for their spyware and virus infections.
