Building my 1st computer. a few questions

Recommended Posts

The setup is an AMD 1800+ and it didn't come with all the cables. Can I use the cable from a p2 233 system to connect hard drive to mobo on new system or will it be a slower connection using the old cable?

Also, I should use the hard drive to fdd1 and cd burner to fdd2 is that correct or run both off 1?

Also the Volcano5 fan isn't mounted on the cpu it fell off or came off and can't see how it goes back on. Can I boot it up and load windows w/o it overheating? Thanks

You can use the old cable, but you won't get over UDMA/66 speeds.

Not sure what the best setup for hd and burner is. I've heard arguments forboth ways.

Don't boot up without the fan on.

Edit. By the way I just completed my new system. It's an XP 1800+ as well. I upgraded from a K6III-400. What a difference.

Steps

1. Use the cable

2. one drive on each ex. hdd on 1 cable cd on 2nd cable

3. primary for hdd secondary cable for cd

4. make sure cpu is secure before attempting to mount fan

actually i doubt it will even boot. Windows XP wont install without the proper cable or it wont start or something. My cuz accidentally broke his cable wire onetime so he thought to use the CD RW drive cable (ATA-33) on his ATA-66 drive (Maxtor) and just leave his normal CDROM so he can install XP and it wouldn't even boot (or was it that it wouldn't install XP) I just know the drive wouldn't work till he borrowed my ATA-100 cables and installed then went to buy his own.
