ICQ 2002a Ad Removing and Message History Question

Question

Greetings all:

I have a question about the Ad Removing in ICQ 2002a. From what I know, deleting icqhttp.dll and also changing the registry key from AutoUpdate from yes to no will disable ads but what if you done this after you installed 2002a the first time around? Is there a way around it assuming you wanted to keep the old message history or is there a way to export and import the message history or some other way to get rid of the ad stuff in the db file? Thanks.

copy your whole icq folder to a different drive. delete your old and reinstall. after you did the ad removal and typed your icq# and pass and it connects. close icq. and move the whole folder in overwriting all. leave the icqhttp.dll out though

I think deleting the "icqhttp.dll" is the old way of getting rid of ads. All I know is that I still have that file, and have had no ads in my ICQ even after doing many installs of the different 2001 and 2002 versions. Never had to edit the registry either.

On mine, I deleted the "AteBrowser" folder, and created a read only file called "AteBrowser" with no extension.

No ads anywhere on my ICQ.

Does that actually work since if I copied everything except the icqhttp.dll file, wouldn't it just replace all the files with the old info or is it really based on the registry?

I tried this a few minutes ago and this is what I did...

1) Moved C:Program FilesICQ folder to DesktopICQ - the folder doesn't have icqhttp.dll since I already deleted it

2) Ran the ICQ 2002a installer and it installed and when ran the

first time, it has that box that thinks I'm not connected to the

internet when I'm on a static IP DSL connection and everything

else like MSN Messenger and AIM and IE6 is online, wonder

what's causing it? I clicked on the X to quit ICQ and then

deleted the icqhttp.dll file from C:Program FilesICQ. So I

loaded up ICQ again and got presented with the dialog

of not being online and had the continue to register,

connect again. So I selected Continue to Register instead

of the connect option, here I chose the Existing user and put

in my login/password.

3) As soon as ICQ loaded up, my contact list was there and I tried

a send message dialogue and it does look correct without the

ads or the space taking up the adbox so I quite ICQ. I noticed

that the 2002a folder is created in C:Program FilesICQ

4) So now I copy DesktopICQ back to C:Program Files which

I selected to replace all files and then I started ICQ. My

contact list and message history are all there but when I

selected send message, it doesn't have the ads but the

space is still there. I think the stuff is actually in the files

in the 2002a folder but how do you get rid of the adbox

and still keep the message history?
