sphere
I already have a Fujitsu 20gb HD and I'm going out tomorrow to buy another 40gb, 60gb or 80gb. I was just wondering whether there is anything I should check before I buy it. It's most likely going to be a Seagate (7200rpm), maybe WD or Maxtor. I have a 1.5ghz, with the Asus P4T Motherboard. Is there anything I need to make sure of before I buy and install one? I had a look at the manual and it doesn't say anything about HDDs. Thanks in advance. sphere
I've noticed there are IDE and ATA hard drives. What's the difference, and which one do I get?

macster
There is no difference at all between ATA and IDE. they r just two names for the same thing. Just be careful wth the setting of jumpers for your harddisks
yg17
I have 3 WD hard drives, and havent had a single problem from any of them. So I would recommend a WD hard drive. But I've heard Maxtors are good, too.
Roger H. Veteran Posted July 13, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 13, 2002 HDs are nothing to install now.. simply plug it in and depended on if it's a slave or master just set the jumper and then boot. Windows XP will need to activate it so you'll have to right click my computer and choose manage and then go to disk management and right click the drive and choose activate. Then it'll be assigned an drive letter in My Computer.
hurting101
I heard something about having 2 hard drives on the same IDE cable restricts their speed or something. Is there a way around this?

I never had the do that, I installed the harddrive, and when I booted up, I got a little tool tip in the tastbar, and it had a drive letter :)

zi0nx5
i'm also looking into another WD hard drive. I had problems with Maxtors a while back so I'm a lil baised against that corp. Anyways... how big of a difference is there between the standard 2mb buffer and 8mb buffer HDs??? Is there any NOTICEABLE differenced between the two? seems like an obvious question but there's also a HUGE price difference between the two also... :paranoid:

lawtai
The new Maxtor quiet hard drives are supposed to be really nice, and they're a lot quieter too. IBM used to be the top HD maker, but they've had a lot of problems with their hard drives recently and I think have already sold off their HD division, but I could be wrong. I'd say go with a Western Digital or a Maxtor.
