Windows Vista... Longhorn... Blackcomb

Recommended Posts

Not quite. Vista is the new name for Longhorn. Longhorn (Vista) was going to be the successor to XP and it should have come out about 2 years ago, and Blackcomb was supposed to be the successor to Longhorn and it should have come out this year or the next. Blackcomb was supposed to be the next big thing, but instead Microsoft delayed Longhorn until next year and made it what Blackcomb would have probably been. Nothing is known about Blackcomb right now.

XP -> Vista client

2003 Server -> Vista Server

Vista Server -> Blackcomb (unsure)

There is no more "Longhorn", Longhorn is Vista.

Longhorn was just a code name, and they always change those. Windows XP was called Whistler when it was being developed. Windows 98 was Memphis, Windows 95 was Chicago. :)

Yeah...the "Blackcomb" team was disbanded so that everyone could focus on Vista.

I heard that after that there will be something codenamed "Everest" or "Excalibur" :blink:

Its supposed to refer to the clarity Windows will bring to working with files and performing tasks.

Personally I'm not to keen on the name and IMHO the latest vista builds demonstrate everything but clarity.

I don't think its necessary for us, enthusiast to be really thinking about Blackcomb right now. Its just too far out to determine whats gonna be in it or if it will be both Client or Server. At Microsoft, its just known as the next Server release since thats what most of the official talks about it revolve around.

I personally wouldn't mind seeing it be a portable operating system for other processor architectures, Intel EM64T, AMD64, Power and Sparc.
